China says Wuhan water park pool party was 'payback' after coronavirus, calls critics 'sour grapes'
Huge crowds attended a music festival at a water park in Wuhan, the first coronavirus epicenter
Danielle WallaceBy Danielle Wallace | Fox News
A Chinese state-backed newspaper attempted to do some damage control Tuesday after photos emerged from the weekend showing thousands of partygoers crowded into a water park in Wuhan, where the novel coronavirus was first reported before breaking out across the globe.
Seen by some as a slap in the face to the rest of the world, photos from the first epicenter of the coronavirus showed crowds packed into the Wuhan Maya Beach Water Park to attend an electronic music festival Saturday. UK's The Telegraph ran a front-page story about the viral images with the headline: "China's Big Party: Life's a beach in Wuhan as world pays virus price."
Global Times, an English-language newspaper backed by the Chinese Communist Party, slammed critics as "sour grapes" and championed Wuhan's strict lockdown measures and the testing of its nearly 11 million residents, saying the massive pool party was "payback."

Reuters: A music festival was held at a water park in Wuhan last Saturday. Have you heard of this? Do you have any comment on it?
Zhao Lijian: I watched news about this on television. It reflects a strategic victory achieved by Wuhan and the Chinese government in fighting the virus. AFP also reported this event. It is said that in Western countries people were surprised when hearing about it. So through your reports and lens, I hope people in those countries can get to know what is actually happening in China, the efforts we made and the outcomes we achieved in defeating COVID-19.

A water-park music festival in Wuhan attracted thousands of partygoers — but residents say normal life is still on pause

For the most part, Gcabashe said, Wuhan hasn't returned to normal.
The city still isn't accepting international flights. Healthy Chinese citizens must install a "digital pass" on their smartphone that permits them to board public transit or visit hotels and restaurants. Shopping malls have reopened and traffic has come roaring back, but gyms, libraries, and museums are only operating at half capacity. Movie theaters require masks and only 30% of seats can be occupied. Bars and nightclubs remain closed.
...
Only high school seniors have returned to school so far, though the city is preparing for all schools to reopen in September.
