Man with Covid-19 symptoms waits hours for help at police station
    May 29, 2020

This man has been sitting under the olive tree for at least four hours outside the Santodorp police station, waiting for the NCCR and BOG for help. He volunteered there with respiratory problems and chest pains.

According to the Surinamese newspaper Dagblad Suriname, the man in question says that he came into contact with the 12th person who tested positive, who came from French Guiana on 25 May. He complains of pains all over his body.

His housemates had already been picked up at home earlier this week and had been separated by BOG and NCCR.

UPDATE: The man named Rakesh was picked up by BOG and NCCR at 6.15 pm. Other persons who were in contact with him will probably also be picked up.

Suriname now officially has 53 COVID-19 cases
            June 2, 2020 at 3:47 pm

The number of COVID-19 cases has increased from 34 active cases to 43 active cases. Suriname now officially has 53 COVID-19 cases.

Health Minister Antoine Elias announced during the COVID-19 press conference today that within 24 hours Suriname had numerous persons who tested positive with the COVID-19 virus.

The minister further indicated that all patients tested positive, 43 cases, were hospitalized. Some patients are on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He clarified that everyone receives medical care. The Epidemiology department is also involved in contact tracing of persons. Hundreds of people are tested for the virus every day, the minister says.

Several people have been quarantined so that any contamination with the virus can be contained. All of Albina is being scrutinized by the epidemic team, Elias said. The Ministry of Health calls on society to follow the messages from the official channels and to continue to take preventive measures.

The minister urges the persons to have the house number or contact number of their general practitioner nearby and to remember them well. When people have flu complaints with a fever higher than 39 degrees Celsius, coughing, shortness of breath, nose colds, they are called upon to contact the doctor by telephone. It is requested to avoid visits to the police as much as possible.

The number of COVID-19 cases has increased from 45 active cases to 63 active cases. Suriname now has a total of 73 positively tested persons with COVID-19. Some patients are on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The number of COVID-19 cases in Suriname has risen by eighteen since yesterday.

From tomorrow, a total lockdown applies at 6 p.m. in Suriname. This lockdown lasts until Friday June 12 at 6 a.m. This means that everyone has to stay at home. Cars may have a maximum of two occupants and taxis may carry a maximum of two passengers, Vice President Ashwin Adhin said this afternoon.

Suriname is in the middle of the local spread phase. Like all other countries, the country follows the so-called contamination curve. That means, according to Adhin, that even more people will become infected in the coming days.

Number of COVID-19 cases increased to 90
                  June 5, 2020 at 9:09 pm

The number of people infected with the COVID-19 virus was adjusted from 89 to 90 during the COVID-19 press conference. The number of active cases has now been set at 80. Cleopatra Jessurun, Director of Public Health, said that a total of 1,175 tests were carried out by various laboratories.

She also immediately said that there is no manipulation of the figures and that testing has continued both before and after the elections. Jessurun explained that the management team has adjusted its strategy. Indeed, there is a scarcity of personnel and consumables. She further indicated that 75 percent of COVID-19 cases are not in need of care. This means that they have been tested positive, but have no complaints. As a result, they do not immediately need medical care. These persons are placed in isolation. Those in need, 25 percent of the cases, are in the Wanica Regional Hospital. Seven percent of this number is included in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Of the number of people currently in the ICU, one person is unstable. The rest is fairly stable, Jessurun explained. She also indicated that there are many reports on the 178 line. The number increased further from 28 May. On June 2, 2,500 telephone calls were received. She noted the response to the management team's call to use the 178 line only for the serious cause the country is in. The prank phone calls have partially decreased.
Jessurun took the opportunity to thank the frontline personnel for their commitment. This concerns the nurses, the doctors, the drivers who collect COVID-19 patients, specialists and others.

Number of active Covid-19 infections in Suriname increased again
                    June 6, 2020

The number of corona cases has risen again in Suriname today. The number of active cases increased by 9 on Saturday and went from 81 to 90, according to the official Covid-19 website. The total number of people tested positive so far is 100.

75 percent of active cases have no symptoms and no urgent need for care. They are therefore placed in isolation and, given their condition, do not need to be hospitalized.

The remaining 25 percent of those who are somewhat more serious, therefore, are in urgent need of care. This group is housed in the Regional Hospital of Wanica.

Earlier today, the second death from the COVID-19 virus in the country was recorded. The woman was admitted to the Wanica Regional Hospital.
From the time of admission, this COVID-19 positive patient was in a very worrisome situation. She was treated on a ventilator. An attempt has been made to keep her alive with all available means and medication.

                        130 COVID-19 cases now
                        June 9, 2020 at 2:12 pm

The COVID-19 counter was updated from 128 to 130 cases last night. Those are two cases. The number of active cases is now 119. Yesterday, society was startled with a second person who died of the virus. It concerns a female person who was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Wanica Regional Hospital.

This COVID-19 positive patient has been in a very worrisome situation since her admission. The patient was treated on the ventilator. An attempt has been made to keep her alive with all available means and medication.

Currently 230 people are in quarantine. On April 3, the first person in Suriname died of COVID-19.

There are now cluster infections, which means that an infected person can infect several people in his or her immediate environment. That is why the number of COVID-19 infected persons is increasing rapidly. At the same time, positive testing of a person immediately involves contact tracing, whereby everyone with whom this person has been in contact is identified and immediately tested.

In order to identify and remove as many infected persons as possible from society, a tight and strict total lockdown has recently taken effect for two weeks. Society is asked to cooperate in order to reduce the risk of multiple infections.
