First case of coronavirus in Suriname, travelers no longer allowed


The first case of coronavirus infection has been discovered in Suriname. Travelers will no longer be allowed to enter the country. Vice President Ashwin Adhin just made this announcement in the National Assembly.

It is a man who traveled from the Netherlands to Suriname. He has been quarantined at home under police supervision.

As of tomorrow, March 14, 2020, travelers will no longer be admitted to Surinamese territory. After 30 days, this decision will be evaluated and it will be decided whether the closing period will be extended.

On Friday afternoon, the Surinamese government also immediately withdrew all permits issued for holding public entertainment in Suriname.

There was still good news at the daily press conference of the Covid management team.

Director Veira was there again. The two weeks (14 days) since her (last) meeting with the French diplomat who tested positive afterwards passed without showing symptoms, which means that she is not infected. This also applies to the rest of her team. There was quite a bit of confusion and confusion about this, because the colonel had not been quarantined for two weeks, but it was mistakenly stated on the Covid-19 website. This has since been corrected. When a person quarantines, counts are made from the contact with a (possibly) infected person, and if in the 14 days that follow there are no illness or symptoms, it can be assumed that the person was not infected. People coming from abroad, all countries are now high-risk areas, must therefore spend those full two weeks in quarantine. The screening is done on the 15th day, and if everything looks good, the person is allowed to move freely again.

Also good news was that two out of 10 people who are / were infected have already tested negative twice, and a third of them have already been tested negative once. After two negative tests, 24 hours apart, the person goes from isolation to 1 week at home quarantine. Then a final test follows, and if it is also negative, the person is declared cured. Otherwise, the counter is still at 10 infections, zero deaths.

Today the repatriation flight from Miami also took place, with about 100 people on it. We will report more information about this tomorrow.

Partly due to the illegal crossing at the borders, the retrieval of people who are still abroad, including the Netherlands, is delayed.

Three patients in Suriname, who are infected with the coronavirus and are in the hospital, are recovering. They will be released from hospital soon. Previously, a total of six COVID-19 patients tested positive had been declared healthy and discharged from the hospital.

This was said by the director of the Public Health Agency (BOG), Minouche Bromet, during the regular press meeting of the COVID-19 Management team on Wednesday, April 15, 2020.

In Suriname, a total of 10 people were tested positive for the coronavirus. According to Bromet, since the last positively tested case of COVID-19, no new infections have been recorded in Suriname to date.

In total, only 97 people are now quarantined. This number will increase again because the Surinamese government is recovering stranded citizens from the Netherlands. The first flight in this context will be operated on Monday 20 April 2020.

COVID-19: Counter number of infected persons in Suriname increases to 8

In Suriname, another patient infected with the coronavirus (COVID-19) was declared cured and sent home. The counter of the number of people healed has now also been adjusted on the website from 7 to 8.

Adjusted measures COVID-19 measures in Suriname

The Surinamese president Desi Bouterse explained new COVID-19 measures in Suriname on Saturday evening 9 May. In addition, there was specific attention for the border rivers for which a total lockdown applies until 10 May. The Surinamese government has now adjusted this to a partial lockdown until 17 May this lockdown is from 6 pm to 6 am.

The partial lockdown in the rest of Suriname will be adjusted with effect from Sunday 10 May and will then apply from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The adjusted measures from Sunday 10 May:

In consultation with the traditional authority, it has been decided to extend the lockdown on the border rivers Lawa, Marowijne and Tapanahony rivers by at least one week, until Sunday 17 May. However, the total lockdown on these rivers will be converted into a partial lockdown and will last from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
Please note. The borders remain closed. Crossing to and from our neighboring countries is therefore not permitted. Checkpoints will also continue to exist in the country to control movements between coastal plains and other districts.
The partial lockdown in the rest of Suriname will be adjusted with effect from Sunday 10 May and will then apply from 11 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Public health measures remain in full force.
This means that the hygiene measures continue to apply: wash hands, sneeze or cough in your arm cavity, as well as keep them two meters apart.
The gathering is extended to a maximum of 50 people, provided that the order and hygiene measures are observed.

The government has reserved SRD 400 million and has now also received substantial international financial support. “We can use this to pay for the package of support measures. This concerns support for the Surinamese population: the worker, the service provider and the entrepreneur who is struggling financially as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. We are talking about the shaving ice men, seniors, people with disabilities, traditional authority, bus drivers, boatswains, artists, and so on. ” The president says that the finance minister will explain this support plan in more detail at a press conference on Monday, May 11.

Suriname, we must now persist. Above all, we need to realize that we cannot go back to what we considered normal. The health rules will continue to apply for the time being. Another man Covid-19 tested positive

A man who recently arrived from French Guiana to Suriname appears to have tested positive for Covid-19.

As previously announced on Social media, that a number of people from our neighboring countries have come to Suriname to infect the society of Suriname, now appears to be based on truth.

This 12th positive tested man entered the country on May 25. He went to a doctor with a high fever on May 26, after which the man was tested. This turned out to be positive.

A total of 12 people in Suriname were tested positive with this infection. So there are currently two active cases in Suriname. A Brazilian entered the country illegally by boat earlier this month.

The Covid-19 team is investigating who this man came into contact with. The investigation continues.
