Press conference Update Covid-19 team: Good news!
        Posted on April 2, 2020

There was still good news at the daily press conference of the Covid management team.

Director Veira was there again. The two weeks (14 days) since her (last) meeting with the French diplomat who tested positive afterwards passed without showing symptoms, which means that she is not infected. This also applies to the rest of her team. There was quite a bit of confusion and confusion about this, because the colonel had not been quarantined for two weeks, but it was mistakenly stated on the Covid-19 website. This has since been corrected. When a person quarantines, counts are made from the contact with a (possibly) infected person, and if in the 14 days that follow there are no illness or symptoms, it can be assumed that the person was not infected. People coming from abroad, all countries are now high-risk areas, must therefore spend those full two weeks in quarantine. The screening is done on the 15th day, and if everything looks good, the person is allowed to move freely again.

Also good news was that two out of 10 people who are / were infected have already tested negative twice, and a third of them have already been tested negative once. After two negative tests, 24 hours apart, the person goes from isolation to 1 week at home quarantine. Then a final test follows, and if it is also negative, the person is declared cured. Otherwise, the counter is still at 10 infections, zero deaths.

Today the repatriation flight from Miami also took place, with about 100 people on it. We will report more information about this tomorrow.

Suriname fears for COVID-19 indigenous refugees from French Guiana

Posted on Sunday, April 12, 2020

In Suriname, it is feared that sixteen people tested for the COVID-19 virus from France will cross the road. Some people fled from quarantine. NDP MP Grace Watamaleo from Marowijne is very concerned about this situation.

The politician urges indigenous family members in the village of Galibi not to receive these persons, but to return them to their quarantine site. In addition, she also calls for the authorities to be notified immediately.

It often happens that people cross over to Suriname to make purchases. Mainly food is bought. What worries the parliamentarian even more is that boat owners carry people despite the government's warning. The boat owners feel that they are avoiding income due to the measures. Watamaleo asks for everyone's support to end illegal crossings.

President Desi Bouterse announced in a television speech on Friday that the partial lockdown, which would last through yesterday, will be extended by two weeks. This decision was taken after an emergency meeting with the security authorities, Friday, on the illegal crossing of persons at the borders.

Partly due to the illegal crossing at the borders, the retrieval of people who are still abroad, including the Netherlands, is delayed.

The head of state has called on society to stay at home as much as possible. If the situation has not improved after two weeks, the measures will be further tightened. The state of emergency in the border areas will then be declared, the head of state said.

The COVID-19 situation in Suriname is stable and the authorities want to keep it that way. But if people cross illegally, they endanger the health situation of themselves and their fellow human beings.

In Suriname, ten people tested positive for the coronavirus. The first case was on March 13, when a woman returning from the Netherlands was tested positive. In the meantime, four persons have been healed and one person has died.

Curing six COVID-19 patients in Suriname
Posted on Monday, April 13, 2020

In Suriname, six people infected with the COVID-19 virus have been cured. This good news was recently shared on the Covid-19 website.

The first COVID-19 case was confirmed on March 13 in a woman who returned from the Netherlands. The total number of people tested positive in Suriname is ten. Recently, a man did not survive the fight against this virus.

In order to contain the corona infections, the partial lockdown in the country has been extended by another two weeks. President Desi Bouterse came to this decision, because there is still danger near the borders.

Three COVID-19 patients recovering and soon from hospital
                April 16, 2020
'Suriname only has 30 Intensive Care spots, so stay home!'

Three patients in Suriname, who are infected with the coronavirus and are in the hospital, are recovering. They will be released from hospital soon. Previously, a total of six COVID-19 patients tested positive had been declared healthy and discharged from the hospital.

This was said by the director of the Public Health Agency (BOG), Minouche Bromet, during the regular press meeting of the COVID-19 Management team on Wednesday, April 15, 2020.

In Suriname, a total of 10 people were tested positive for the coronavirus. According to Bromet, since the last positively tested case of COVID-19, no new infections have been recorded in Suriname to date.

In total, only 97 people are now quarantined. This number will increase again because the Surinamese government is recovering stranded citizens from the Netherlands. The first flight in this context will be operated on Monday 20 April 2020.

200 people will be taken back and everyone who enters Suriname must be in government quarantine for 14 days.

Again COVID-19 patient declared cured in Suriname
                        April 30, 2020
COVID-19: Counter number of infected persons in Suriname increases to 8

In Suriname, another patient infected with the coronavirus (COVID-19) was declared cured and sent home. The counter of the number of people healed has now also been adjusted on the website from 7 to 8.

At the moment there is therefore only 1 active case. The number of positively tested people in Suriname is still ten today, of which one person has died. Currently, 280 people are quarantined in government locations.

Despite the good news, according to Dr. Vreden, the virus still poses a threat in Suriname. In all three neighboring countries, the cases are still on the rise and new people who test positive have come forward every day. According to him, Suriname has been doing reasonably well so far, because we also adhere reasonably to the rules.

Doctor Vreden: "As long as we do that we will make it." He emphasizes that we have a duty to prevent the virus from spreading in our country.

Suriname no longer has COVID-19 patients
                          May 2, 2020 at 10:32 pm

All persons who were tested positive for the COVID-19 virus in Suriname were declared cured. The last person was also released from the hospital. The counter of people who tested positive was ten.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus in China last December, the first person was tested positive in Suriname on March 13. It was a woman who had returned from the Netherlands.

Her husband, who also tested positive, passed away on April 3. There are now 279 persons in government quarantine. This mainly concerns persons who had been stranded in the Netherlands since the closure of the airspace. These persons arrived on April 20 with a repatriation flight in Suriname.

In addition, there was specific attention for the border rivers for which a total lockdown applies until 10 May. The Surinamese government has now adjusted this to a partial lockdown until 17 May this lockdown is from 6 pm to 6 am.

Please note. The borders remain closed. Crossing to and from our neighboring countries is therefore not permitted. Checkpoints will also continue to exist in the country to control movements between coastal plains and other districts.

This means that the hygiene measures continue to apply: wash hands, sneeze or cough in your arm cavity, as well as keep them two meters apart.
The gathering is extended to a maximum of 50 people, provided that the order and hygiene measures are observed.
Please note. The cr?ches remain closed. The buses are not allowed to drive yet.

The National COVID-19 Management Team will hold discussions with organizations from Monday 11 May to indicate the conditions that they must meet in order to restart their operations. This includes the catering industry, sports centers, religious organizations, entertainment venues and the transport sector.
                            Education.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Culture is currently working on a plan to restart at least the exam classes, at all levels, from 1 June. The mandatory 14-day quarantine applies to all persons coming from abroad. I should also note that the quarantined persons will be able to vote on May 25.

                            Bridge package
“I have also told you that the government will draw up an economic bridging and social support plan to deal with the economic and social problems that have arisen as a result of COVID-19. The package has already been developed for a period of six months. This is the period when the impact is expected to be the hardest. At the same time, we also look ahead. Not only because we have to be ready because a repeat of COVID-19 is possible, but also because the recovery phase, with everything in our power, must be encouraged and strengthened, ”says President Bouterse.

The government has reserved SRD 400 million and has now also received substantial international financial support. “We can use this to pay for the package of support measures. This concerns support for the Surinamese population: the worker, the service provider and the entrepreneur who is struggling financially as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. We are talking about the shaving ice men, seniors, people with disabilities, traditional authority, bus drivers, boatswains, artists, and so on. ” The president says that the finance minister will explain this support plan in more detail at a press conference on Monday, May 11.

Suriname, we must now persist. Above all, we need to realize that we cannot go back to what we considered normal. The health rules will continue to apply for the time being. That means we will have to adapt and interact and work in a new way. Let us monitor the changes to the measures with the greatest responsibility so that our successes are not simply lost.

Finally, I wish all mothers a very happy Mother's Day tomorrow. Thank you for your faith. Thank you for your cooperation. Good evening, ”said President Bouterse.

                              Another man Covid-19 tested positive
                              Posted on May 27, 2020

A man who recently arrived from French Guiana to Suriname appears to have tested positive for Covid-19.

As previously announced on Social media, that a number of people from our neighboring countries have come to Suriname to infect the society of Suriname, now appears to be based on truth.

This 12th positive tested man entered the country on May 25. He went to a doctor with a high fever on May 26, after which the man was tested. This turned out to be positive.

A total of 12 people in Suriname were tested positive with this infection. So there are currently two active cases in Suriname. A Brazilian entered the country illegally by boat earlier this month.

The Covid-19 team is investigating who this man came into contact with. The investigation continues.
