Zika: Peru declares state of emergency

    13.07.2016 at 23h111

They are already confirmed 102 people infected with the virus, including 34 pregnant

The Peruvian authorities declared Wednesday a state of emergency in the north, after being confirmed 102 cases of people infected with the Zika virus.

The emergency period was announced by El Peruano, which ensured that the Ministry of Health and local authorities are working to prevent transmission of the disease, which is carried mainly by mosquitoes.

Cases detected include, so far, 34 pregnant women. The Zika virus can cause microcephaly in infants, a normally rare birth defect, that manifests itself by an abnormally small skull and brain and possible neurological damage.

An outbreak of Zika in Brazil, where about 1,600 babies are born with this defect, raised concerns about the health of athletes and visitors in Rio de Janeiro, for the Olympic Games next month.

There is increasing evidence to support the conclusion that the Zika virus can also be transmitted sexually.

In adults and children is usually associated with mild flu-like symptoms and skin irritation. Furthermore, this virus is associated with neurological disorders, life-threatening, Guillain-Barre.
