Press Release Ministry of Public Health, Ecuador

With the confirmation of the circulation of the virus Zika May 15, 2015 in northeastern Brazil and 16 October in Colombia, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) urged Member States to establish and maintain the capacity to detect and confirm cases of Zika virus infection.

The Ministry of Public of Ecuador (MSP) Health, through the National Epidemiological Surveillance confirms that until January 9, 2016 have been reported two (2) first cases ratified by laboratory Zika virus infected. Patients who are living in Quito Ecuador and presented rash (rash), fever, itching, headache, generalized joint pain, conjunctival hyperemia. As part of epidemiological surveillance, blood samples were sent to the National Institute of Public Health Research (INSPI) were taken. Blood for dengue and chikungunya was processed according to the current protocol with negative results for both and subsequent positive for Zika.
Epidemiological research confirms the presence of imported cases of Zika in Ecuador. Patients traveled because of the holidays this year to the city of Neiva (Huila department capital, endemic area of dengue and chikungunya, with 408 confirmed cases of Zika) remaining in Colombia of December 22, 2015 to 5 January 2016. They are currently being treated in the city of Quito where there is no presence of the vector (mosquito Aedes aegypti).

Faced with suspected cases of Zika in areas where the presence of the vector has intensified actions epidemiological surveillance and vector control. For this reason the MSP strengthened vector control actions in the winter season that is beginning in the country. Promoting behavioral changes aimed at the destruction of farms and self-protection at individual, household and community levels increased.

MOH confirms first indigenous cases of Zika in Ecuador

The Ministry of Health (MOH) announced at a press conference, on 15 January 2016 in Ecuador the indigenous first two confirmed cases of Zika are recorded: one is in Guayaquil; this is a person who traveled to Cupa, in the province of Esmeraldas, on vacation; the other is a person who resides in Portoviejo and not registered as having left the country. All had symptoms consistent with the disease for which samples were taken and the virus was confirmed.

In addition, two imported cases of the disease were reported: a person who traveled to Venezuela from December 27 2015 to January 3, 2016 (8 days). Following his return to Ecuador he moved to Vinces, in the province of Los Rios and the third day rise presented thermal and rash (rash) and the other was imported from Colombia (Neiva) to Portoviejo.

With the two cases confirmed on 15 January 2016 they will complete six; 5 were ratified by laboratory and epidemiological link 1. All patients keep rest at home.

The MSP clarifies that in Quito, where two of the six patients, there is no presence of the vector (mosquito Aedes aegypti).

The First Health Authority against Zika virus circulation, strengthening epidemiological surveillance intensified vector control actions in the winter season taking place in the country. In addition, promoting behavioral changes aimed at the destruction of breeding and protection at individual, household and community levels increased.

In some Brazilian states where the virus is circulating for months Zika has reported an increase much higher than in previous years cases of newborns with microcephaly. According to the preliminary analysis of the investigation by the authorities of that country, probably the risk of microcephaly and malformations in the fetus would be associated with infection in the first trimester of pregnancy. For this reason it is recommended that pregnant women avoid exposure to mosquito bites, especially during this period.

The MSP advises citizens applying repellent on exposed areas of skin, containing DEET (N, N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), IR3535 (3-N-acetyl-N butilesteretil aminopropionic acid) or icaridin (piperidenecarbixilico acid, 1, 2 ( hidrocietil 2), 1 metilpropilester can be applied to exposed skin or clothing and should be used in strict accordance with the instructions on the label. There is no evidence of restriction of use of these repellents in pregnancy as long as they used according to the instructions on the label.

Additionally, the MSP recommended that if you have symptoms such as fever, rash or red spots on the skin, joint pain, red eyes, malaise, go to the nearest health center and do not treat yourself.

Moon said the MSP is developing a monitoring pregnant women in different public health centers in order to detect whether zika cases among this population are presented, because it has presumed that the virus attacks the babies in the first weeks of pregnancy causing microcephaly.

Manabi sum 83% of cases in the country zika

                Elena Paucar 10 August 2016 10:24

Accumulates 82.74% of the national total. Manabi is the province with more confirmed cases of zika , virus transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti .

According to the report of the Secretariat of Health Surveillance , the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), the coastal province, seriously affected by the earthquake last April 16, total 1,376 cases out of 1,663 registered through week Epidemiological 30. Carmina Pinargote , zonal coordinator of Health Manabi , explains that several factors contributed to this high figure. First, because it was a new disease, which increases the degree of suceptabilidad of the population. To this sum the incidence of the rainy season , which kept the transmission peak between April and June. The rains also coincided with the 7.8 - magnitude earthquake, which caused serious damage to infrastructure. Pinargote indicates that Portoviejo and Manta are the most affected areas.

"We still have a lot of debris in these cantons, especially at ground zero. We are concerned that there is land with stagnant water pools that have formed. That could give us problems and that cases do not decrease. Traditionally, depending on the epidemiology of the province this month (August) begin to drop cases. But if they fall should not be because there are still many farms.

" For now, health authorities carried out the inspection of these areas. This information will be sent to the Water Utility to take action.

Another issue that remains on alert physicians are cases zika pregnant, the risks associated with microcephaly in newborns as has happened in countries like Brazil . Manabi more than 130 pregnant women with the virus, according to Pinargote . "Already three children were born and we are following up. So far we do not see anything abnormal. Still, we continue with the controls because it is not easy to just see ultrasounds" .

Acumula el 82,74% del total nacional. Manabí es la provincia con más casos confirmados de zika, virus transmitido por el mosquito Aedes aegypti.
