QUITO, May 18 (Xinhua) -- The Ecuadorian medical organization is observing more than 100 people who were in contact with the child infected with the A/H1N1 virus during a trip to Miami, U.S, Public Health director of Quito Jorge Cueva said on Monday.

Among the people under observance, there are five crew members from the commercial plane where the child traveled one week ago, as well as some customs officers and airport assistants, Cueva added.

"We are observing them in their houses," Cueva said. None of them has showed A/H1N1 flu symptoms yet.

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa has said that the boy, the only confirmed A/H1N1 case, was being treated and recovering at the hospital.
The infected patient was a 12-year-old boy from Guayaquil, Ecuador's economic center, who returned to Ecuador on May 10 from the United States in a commercial flight.

Re: Ecuador observes more than 100 people for possible A/H1N1 flu infection

A question I have. If H1N1-2009 is so mild, why are they observing these individuals? If they are so concerned about it spreading, why aren't they shutting down their airports? I just find it odd that they will go through so much trouble/expense to watch these individuals, when there is likely another case landing anytime now.

An investigation by the Human Rights Ombudsman (PDH) in public hospitals, Ministry of Health and laboratories, concluded that the State of Guatemala is not prepared to prevent or combat an epidemic of new type of influenza A H1N1.

The conclusion is based on surveys conducted by the Ministry of Health, National Epidemiology Center, Roosevelt Hospital, Children's Hospital of Infectious Diseases, Hospital General San Juan de Dios, the anti-League, the San Vicente TB Sanatorium, IGSS hospitals The Hospital Infantil Juan Pablo II, the Economic Cabinet, the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED), the National Institute of Statistics and National Health Laboratory.

About the lab, the study highlights that only has three people to carry out analysis of samples suspected to be sent to them and nationally, and are not testing for all but a few are chosen, which act as "totally irresponsible of the authorities. "

Huehuetenango also highlights that, Jutiapa and San Marcos are the departments with greater risks because they border, but have no anivirales.

The report says: "There is no state policy to prevent, deter and combat the effects of the outbreak of influenza A H1N1, adding to that the budget cut that had the Ministry of Public Health." Moreover, he emphasizes that there are not enough beds or isolation areas to meet people with the symptoms of the disease.

Moreover, the report claims that there have been cases of transmission of H1N1 viruses that have not been reported.
Cites examples of cases in the Hospital San Juan de Dios, where according to research, have used doses of Tamiflu for retroviral sick workers and practitioners of medicine and a doctor who was infected by the virus to care for patients and carriers of the same infected his family. " It cites the case of Mr. Edgar Fernando Vasquez Picnic, inside the hospital said that was not made known.

The report demonstrates the limited capacity of national laboratories that sent last May 9 to 16 samples Valley University for analysis.

AH1N1 with confirmed cases are related to travel to Miami and Mexico
17:43 | Minister of Health, Caroline Chang, said this afternoon that all cases have some kind of connection with travel abroad. One of them has a connection with a passenger who arrived from Mexico.

          Drafting Guayaquil

The Emergency Operations Committee (COE) yesterday discussed the relationship of infection among the seven new cases of influenza confirmed in Ecuador AH1N1.
Health Minister, Caroline Chang, said this afternoon that all cases have some kind of connection with travel abroad. One of them has a connection with a passenger who arrived from Mexico.

The rest is related to United States specifically to travel to Miami. "Why is this happening. Passengers can come asymptomatic, may even be considered at the airport and have no symptoms. But it can be in incubation period. " This virus is transmissible one days before symptoms appear until seven days later.

That is why he redoubled security measures at airports and even while traveling. The provision is that the passengers at the time they are in the air, should wear masks. The crew must identify symptomatic cases and report immediately to health authorities. Upon arrival in Ecuador, filled a form which indicates the basic data of contact and if they display any symptoms. "And those who arrive after travel symptoms should be reported to the Ministry of Health," said Chang.

In Guayaquil, in addition to the Hospital of Infectious Diseases, three other institutions adapt their infrastructure to receive the demand of patients with flu symptoms.

Two tents were set up outside in the outpatient Guayaquil, in the suburbs. Until the morning, about 20 patients were treated for symptoms fever, cough and headache. On Wednesday there were 57 care for that symptom. Cesar Chong, director of the hospital, said that in the morning became a Spanish citizen in the area of emergencies, but was considered suspect and will be referred to the Infectious Diseases Hospital. In the morning was out the presence of the virus AH1N1 in this patient.

Meanwhile, at the Hospital del Ni?o de Icaza Francisco Bustamante (Quito av.) of 1 500 patients admitted per day, 60% have flu symptoms. The director of home health, Patricia Parrales, noted that the diagnoses were upper respiratory or seasonal influenza (flu common). Until yesterday there were no suspected case.

In the hospital installed a mobile clinic in the area outside the emergency care of children with respiratory diseases.

At the hospital pneumologist Alfredo Valenzuela, however, was adapted from an isolation room with 20 beds. This will relieve the demand for Infectious Diseases, where an epidemic is registered in the country.

                            June 17, 2009 07:40am

THE swine flu deaths of two people in Argentina and a mutation of the H1N1 virus detected in Brazil have added to fears that South America is entering a harsh winter beset by the flu pandemic.

While big pharmaceutical firms are ramping up efforts to mass-produce a vaccine for H1N1, they are still months away from having enough stocks - too late for the Southern Hemisphere's winter flu season.

South America has already recorded five deaths from the disease: two in Chile, one in Colombia last week and, most recently, those of a three-month-old girl and a 28-year-old man with leukemia in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires.

The number of infected cases is outstripping figures put out regularly by the World Health Organisation.

According to the latest statistics from national health authorities, Chile has 2355 patients confirmed with H1N1 flu, Argentina has 733, Peru has 113, Brazil 69, Ecuador 84, Venezuela 44, Uruguay 36, Paraguay 25 and Suriname 13.

Those figures are far overshadowed by the data from North America and Central America, the apparent source of the pandemic.

Mexican authorities say they have had 109 deaths and 6,294 infected cases. The United States today added a nine-year-old boy to its death toll, bringing it to 47, alongside 17,855 infected cases. Canada has six deaths and 3515 infections.

Central America and the Caribbean have also been hit, registering nearly 800 infections and three deaths (one each in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala).

Although the A(H1N1) virus has been classed as relatively mild since first being detected in April, its unusually strong effect on the young, on those with other underlying health problems, and on the poor have made it a redoubtable challenge.

Some major drug companies have started producing a vaccine for pre-clinical testing, but one of them, Switzerland's Novartis, told the Financial Times it did not intend to give it away to poor countries.

US rival Baxter said today it should have its H1N1 vaccine commercially available in July.

But there were underlying fears that the virus currently spreading around the world through human-to-human contact might mutate further, possibly into a more deadly form, as happened with the 1918 Spanish flu which killed tens of millions.

Those fears heightened a little today, when a Brazil's Adolfo Lutz Bacteriological Institute said its researchers had identified and isolated a new strain of the A(H1N1) virus in a Sao Paulo patient.

It was not yet known whether that variant, called A/Sao Paulo/1454/H1N1, was more aggressive than the more common type.

The institute said in a statement the mutation comprised alterations in the Hemagglutinin protein which allows the virus to infect new hosts.
