Just for following... bad news...

Rio

----------(sorry for english)-------

Personal note:

The government of Brazil holds a position that deserves attention from international bodies.
The Brazilian people are being deceived by the government with false expectancy that H1N1 is not circulating in the country and there is to worry about.
There was a part of any government measures to alert the public, unless the pamphlets distributed at airports.
Rather, the government commits to disseminating propaganda on TV than there is no case in Brazil, reports that the country is prepared for the event of a pandemic.
This information is an affront to human intelligence, that is that Brazil is going through a crisis in the health system, where even pregnant women are beds available for delivery.
It is important to disclose that the population is not taking any step in the observation of health or the increased attention on possible people who may be infected.
The shows of the May 1?, have 1 million people gathered across the country, without any warning of the health ministry to ensure that participants had a minimum of care.
Unfortunately now that estimate is too late, and can see a bad news in next week.

Hi Mauricio,

I agree with you. The Brazilian population is not warned to take the proper care. As the confirmation of cases, see this story

Kits for rapid diagnosis of swine influenza come to Brazil next week
Advertising

Agency Brazil
the Folha Online

Brazil will receive next Tuesday (5) kits for rapid diagnosis of swine influenza - whose official name is "Influenza A (H1N1)." The kits are produced in a specialized center in Atlanta, USA.

The unit manager for Prevention and Control of Diseases of the PAHO (Pan American Health Organization), Rubén Figueiroa the time of diagnosis of swine influenza could fall about 15 to two or three days.
The kits will be distributed to three laboratories Brazilians: Butantan (São Paulo), Fiocruz (Rio de Janeiro) and Evandro Chagas (Belém).

PAHO is mobilizing a meeting of health ministers of Unasul, the group of 12 countries of South America The objective is to discuss strategies to address the pandemic of swine flu.
In the late afternoon today, the Ministry of Health reported that increased to seven the number of suspected cases of influenza reported in swine in Brazil. The agency reported that three of the patients are hospitalized in Brazil, two in Sao Paulo, one in the Holy Spirit and one in Rio de Janeiro.

Still no confirmation of contamination of the disease in the country. The patients whose cases are now considered suspect by medical treatment.

According to Minister Jose Gomes Temporão (Health), there is no reason to panic, since Brazil has material to produce drugs for the treatment of up to 9 million patients infected with swine influenza virus.

Temporão also warned that there is no need to buy masks and medicine, and said that people should not be afraid to eat pork.

"It's not time to panic or concern. It makes sense to buy masks and medicine. People can eat pork," he said. The minister admitted that there were still problems in the monitoring of flights coming from countries affected by the disease at first, but said that the deficiency was remedied.

Re: Brasil : 20 suspect cases

About your comments and doing my personal comment too,

I agree, I thought it was a nonsense not anything about the feasts of the 1st of May, Virada Cultural and the finals at soccer championship. It seems that nobody noticed the alert 5. As to what is being said on TV I do not know, I do not watch it.
(links to the festivities:
First of May  http://www1.folha.uol.com.br/folha/dinheiro/ult91u559265.shtml [/ url] - 1.8 million people;
Virada Cultural SP on - http:/ / www1.folha.uol.com.br/folha/ilustrada/ult90u559985.shtml [/ url] - 4 million)

In any case, in a more optimistic tone, many people are worried. For the first time I saw alcohol gel to disinfect sale in a pharmacy (in SP) is a simple pharmacy and people are buying. This means that people also do not believe in government and are alert, but is still an individual and fragmented care.

Besides the festivals, giving credit to the government, which worries me more is the public transport in Rio and Sao Paulo. The city of S?o Paulo has around 11 million inhabitants (IBGE http://www.ibge.gov.br/home/presidencia/noticias/noticia_visualiza.php?id_noticia=675&id_pagina=1 [/ url]), the great S?o Paulo is estimated at 17 million. S?o Paulo has the most overcrowded subway in the world (more than China), this virus is very easily spread by people in these conditions. I believe that most cases are still people who traveled and had contact with the virus outside the country. But I do not think the Ministry will monitor all cases since mid-April to have a control over the broadcast.
I think an interesting information (I am not of the area and would not say ... is a question for anyone who can or want to know the answer) is the degree of spread of this virus in comparison with the degree of spread of the virus that circulated last year here in Brazil and also the number of infected / killed by influenza here to have a better clarity of the number of infections that can wait. It is important to be sure we have time for the vaccine and the virus will not decide if mixed with others that are here. Fortunately Butanta the Institute is able to produce the vaccine in large quantities as I read in the press that the polls, they are already working on it. The question is, do we have time?

Re: Brasil : 20 suspect cases

The last news we have... more money for the flu... but no confirmation about the cases... still... information about when the kits will arrive are never confirmed, yesterday they were expecting to arrive today, but today they say it will be tomorrow... it seems that 1. they already have it but don't wanna to confirm the suspected cases, 2. they don't have and are not working to have them also... because they don't want to confirm the suspect cases... They did not sent samples to CDC because they think it would be faster make them here... they don't wont to overload CDC (what, overload with 25 suspects?) I understand all the concerning related to panic, not confirming the suspected cases causes a certain felling of security on people in general, but not in me, I thinking knowing is better than not knowing. The lack of clear answers and the delay on confirming the cases shows that brazilian gov is not prepared to deal with a real problem when it happens. People are not prepared or educated, as this is mild, it's a great opportunity to educate people on what to do when it's not. Moreover, we are starting our flu season, why not reinforce good habits concerning to the usual risks we already have on the other virus, wouldn't that be a good public healthy politic warning people to be more carefull on flu season in general? Why not reinforce that someone who is ill should not go work?
Brasilian politics in health works really well with vacinnes, but what to do when you don't have a vacinne or if it doesn't work?

Other subject:
The news about a death of a 50yo woman yesterday are very confusing... the hospital said at first that they have warned Anvisa and later they said they did not warned them... The oficial sources denies any possibility that the woman (arrived from US) was suspect of having the Swine Flu because she didn't have the symptoms, didn't she?

translation

According to the hospital, the patient was isolated by having informed the U.S. that came 48 hours before, but she didn't have respiratory problems, symptoms characteristic of swine influenza. She had only fever, headache and vomiting.

Ok, so someone who arrived from US and just have fever, headache and vomiting for sure did not died from A/H1N1? Why they are doing the test, if they are sure it's just a bacterian pneumonia? And how someone dies from pneumonia and do not show any "respiratory problems" the day before?

Good interview with Isaias Raw. Some new information for me, after Brazil produced an H1N5 adjuvant of Tamiflu so that the quantity of antiviral is much greater than the number of doses of Tamiflu in stock (He did not enter into details, there is no further information the site of the Butantan). The problem has been tested only in mice and in human trials are being conducted. This seems to indicate that we have enough antiviral to develop the vaccine.
Still, I think an absurd lack of confirmation of cases and lack of initiative by the government for basic health care.
On the interview, the greater concern is the spread between people in the territory, he jokes that canceling football matches would be a tragedy ... but change the course of the interview and starts talking about the vaccine. The argument also does not help him much in a case of a virus that spreads more quickly or in the case of a mutation of the virus, which render the vaccine useless. Part comic, a journalist at the bottom of the right side, sneezing and seems to have flu, they diverted the camera to the left for it not appear ... Anyway, the vaccine does not improve the quality of our hospitals, the training of our doctors nor the education in our schools. It helps, and much to the system not to collapse, we're still very far from being able to tackle even our most common diseases ... dengue, tuberculosis ... the more a more serious epidemic.

On the same site, the latest news say that the CDC sent the kits yesterday and they should arrive today, will test for quality and then confirm the cases ... then still need to wait one more time for confirmation of cases ...

Brazil: Number Of Suspected H1N1 Flu Cases Rises To 28

BRASILIA (Dow Jones)--Brazil's government Tuesday raised the number of suspected cases of H1N1 type A flu in the country to 28 from 25.

The health ministry also reported the number of patients being monitored with some flu-like symptoms fell to 28 from 36. An additional 73 patients with flu-like symptoms were determined not to have the H1N1 strain of the virus, it said.

The government said that so far it has not made any confirmation of actual H1N1 flu cases, but continues to actively monitor travelers with flu-like symptoms returning from countries where the illness was reported to have occurred.

Those under monitoring locally were returning to destinations in 20 Brazilian states.

Brazil's health ministry said that the measures it has adopted for mitigating the spread of the disease were in agreement with recommendations from the World Health Organization, or WHO. The organization last week raised its emergency alert regarding the spread of swine flu to level 5 on a scale of one to six.

The health ministry said its criteria for monitoring patients included reports over the past 10 days of sudden fever above 38 degrees Celsius, or 100 degrees Fahrenheit, along with one or more of the following symptoms: cough, breathing difficulties, headaches and muscular pains.

In a televised interview over the weekend, Brazil's Health Minister Jose Gomes Temporao said that the government had about 12,500 allotments of medication ready to treat the illness and raw materials on hand to administer prescriptions for up to 9 million cases.

A severe outbreak of H1N1 flu virus type A occurred in Mexico in recent weeks, where more than 20 deaths from the illness have been reported.

According to the WHO, more than 1,400 cases of the H1N1 flu have since been detected in at least 20 countries, including Mexico, the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Germany, New Zealand, Israel, France, Italy, El Salvador, Austria, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, the Netherlands, Ireland, Switzerland, Colombia, South Korea and Portugal.
