Detected four people with influenza A in Carmen de Areco
      [February 2, 2013 20:18]
Through a national portfolio statement, by the Minister Juan Manzur, reported on the status of patients in the medical center.
Four people hospitalized from November 11 in hospital in Buenos Aires city of Carmen de Areco, are infected with influenza A.

The director of Preventive Medicine, Ministry of Health of Buenos Aires , Luis Crovetto , had said that the unrest that hit eleven people in the health center was due to a "hospital infection" because since "nine days ago there were no new cases."

Past 19, the national portfolio, by the Minister Juan Manzur , issued a statement in which he said that "after studies conducted in the Laboratory of Respiratory Viruses" Malbr?n Institute, "detected the presence of the viral genome of influenza A in Four samples of patients affected by the outbreak of acute pneumonia "in Carmen de Areco hospital.

"This clearly reveals the importance of being vaccinated against flu because influenza is a potentially serious illness for people within the risk groups, as in the case of health care workers," said Manzur.

He added that "right now there is no disease viral circulation in Argentina", and remarked that "the first case of those that occurred in the hospital of Carmen de Areco correspond to a patient who entered the country with the virus from U.S. and spread to people I had contact only in the field of intensive care "health center.

Health authorities reported that since the closure of the intensive care unit of the hospital, 10 days ago, have not detected new cases of the disease. Of the eleven affected patients, two nurses in "serious and critical condition, mechanically ventilated" confirmed Crovetto.

In an interview with Radio 10, the official stressed "as positive fact for nine days there were no new cases, so this reaffirms the definition of hospital infection."http://www.eldiario24.com/nota/27729...-de-areco.html

            "NO VIRUS CIRCULATION"
Four cases of influenza A in Carmen de Areco

The Ministry of Health reported that this is "probably the primary cause of the outbreak in ten people , including employees and inpatient "in this hospital and on which no one had an accurate diagnosis. Have been infected by a person from the United States, who had been admitted to the intensive care area.
The flu cases were confirmed by the Institute Malbr?n where analyzes were performed by conventional PCR technique and, after learning the results warned that given the duration of the patients, the amount of genome analyzed was low , so that further studies will be required to reconfirm these results. ..http://www.pagina12.com.ar/diario/ul...013-02-02.html

Amazing finds, Treyfish. So the outbreak is due to H1N1 after all, and this serves as a reminder than tests for influenza can produce false negatives.

Perhaps the fact that one of the travelers had returned from the US (first reported in post #11) should have been an important clue.

To only five days of which the Department of from Buenos Aires Health should have denied that the flu A was the cause of the sprout of a sharp infection that affected 11 persons in the hospital of Carmen de Areco, the Department of Health of the Nation informed yesterday that the viral genoma of the virus of the flu A was found in the samples of four of the affected patients, which were analyzed in the Institute Malbr?n. Although the majority of the affected patients evolves in favorable form, two nurses of the hospital who contracted the infection were still yesterday inmates in critical state.
' In this moment there is no viral circulation of the illness in the Argentina ', clarified yesterday the minister of Health, Juan Luis Manzur, at the time that he added that ' the first case of the happened ones in the hospital of Carmen de Areco would correspond to that of a patient who entered to the country with the virus proceeding from the United States and who infected persons with whom it had contact only in the ambience of the intensive therapy of the nosocomio '. The United States faces this northern winter an epidemic of flu of major magnitude than the average, which is affecting with special severity the biggest persons.

Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 was not cited in any of the above articles in Spanish (''Gripe A'').

Since in the US the overwhelming majority of influenza A viruses circulating are of subtype H3N2, it is likely that the cluster of Argentinian cases are also caused by the same subtype.

The hyperacute clinical presentation of these nosocomial cases, however, could signal the presence of other pathogens and until a more precise aethiological studies will be performed and results made public, I would remain cautious about the actual causative agent in this cluster.

Posts #18 and #19 refer to "four cases of swine flu". Since I doubt H3N2v is involved, I am assuming the seasonal flu detected is H1N1pdm09, and made the title change in this thread based on those articles.

I have changed the thread title to omit H1N1pdm09. Sometimes reporters get the story wrong. Sometimes they have the title incorrect but the body of the article correct - and also vice versa.

Ten days ago there was a spread of a strange illness that affected nurses Hospital Nuestra Se?ora del Carmen, in the town of Carmen de Areco Buenos Aires. As a precaution, immediately closed the intensive care unit of the hospital, and from that moment we did not detect new cases of the disease.
