    South America: H1N1 death rate by country

    As of 23 Dec 2009

    So far, 3,153 deaths due to novel A/H1N1 influenza have been registered and reported from countries in South America, according to ECDC 23 Dec daily update http://ecdc.europa.eu/en/healthtopic...rt_0900hrs.pdf

    Measuring death rate by dividing number of lethal cases by total population standings as of mid-year 2009* returns the following tabulation

    BRAZIL (1632) : 8.42
    PARAGUAY (52) : 8.19
    ECUADOR (96) : 7.05
    PERU (203) : 6.96
    BOLIVIA (58) : 5.88
    FRENCH GUIANA (1) : 4.43
    COLOMBIA (190) : 4.16
    VENEZUELA (118) : 4.13
    SURINAME (2) : 3.85
    GUYANA (0) : 0.00

    ° awaiting updates from Uruguay. Last report released on 9 Sep (which was first official report released since late July).
    Neighbour Argentina has reported 20 per cent more cases since mid-September

    Interesting observation

    Notice the three southernmost countries on top of the 'chart', while the five northernmost countries are occupying all the five last positions of the table
