  • Confirmed and Suspected Deaths in South America

    Shiloh

This is 99% the result of Shiloh's incredible efforts, but I've kept a tally based on the media reports and case details provided by Shiloh and just wanted to provide an update as to what is happening in South America.

    Total Confirmed and Suspected Deaths

    Argentina - 445
    Bolivia - 10
    Brazil - 76
    Chile - 96
    Columbia - 17
    Ecuador - 18
    Paraguay - 19
    Peru - 30
    Uruguay - 24
    Venezuala - 5

    Total - 740

Of these, 169 are suspected cases in Argentina. All other are confirmed.

A few items of concern that I have noted:

In the Buenos Aires Province of Argentina (129 confirmed and suspected deaths), it has been reported that 10% of the deaths are health care workers and up to 40% are pregnant women.

Some of the infants delivered by C-section (mostly premature) did not survive and those deaths aren't included in the counts. Other infants have been saved.

I can't recall which country, but one report indicated that 12 pregnant women had died over the past week and 5 had been confirmed as having A/H1N1. The remaining tests are pending.
