Peru declared a health emergency on Thursday in 12 departments and in a province of the Andean country, due to the "high risk of the outbreak of polio and measles."

According to international agencies - cited by El Desconcierto - it was reported that it will also start a campaign to vaccinate 2.5 million children under the age of five against these diseases.

The measure was taken after the National Center for Epidemiology, Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) issued an alert for the intensification of epidemiological surveillance and the response to a case of poliovirus derived from type 1 vaccine in a native community of Loreto.

It should be remembered that the alerts were issued at the end of March after a case of acute poliolitis was detected in a one-year-old baby in the Amazon region of Loreto.

The decree will be in force for the departments of Amazonas, Arequipa, Lambayeque, Lima, Loreto, Madre de Dios, Moquegua, Puno, San Martín, Tumbes, Ucayali, the province of Callao and Tacna.

The measure is expected to be valid for 90 days.

It should be remembered that Tacna is bordering the city of Arica.

An intense commercial and labor exchange is recorded between the two departments due to their proximity, in addition there is a large flow of people.

Approximately 130,000 people are mobilized between the two cities.

Minsa will strengthen vaccination against polio and measles for the benefit of more than 2.5 million boys and girls

    Press release

Children under 5 years of age can be vaccinated against these diseases and effectively prevent them

    May 24, 2023 - 7:07 p.m.

During the recent Council of Ministers, the health emergency was approved due to the risk of an outbreak of poliomyelitis and measles in 12 departments and the constitutional province of Callao.

Thus, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) will strengthen coverage against polio and measles, through vaccination sweeps, in Amazonas, Arequipa, Lambayeque, Lima, Loreto, Madre de Dios, Moquegua, Puno, San Martín, Tacna, Tumbes, Ucayali and the constitutional province of Callao.

These are regions where girls and boys under 5 years of age have not completed their doses against polio and measles. Therefore, they will be sought to apply the Regular Scheme vaccines and, thus, avoid cases of both diseases and others.

“The objective is to intensify vaccination and improve coverage in our country. The goal is to protect more than 2,500,000 boys and girls under 5 years of age with doses against polio, measles, mumps, and rubella," said the Minister of Health, Rosa Gutiérrez.

Likewise, the health emergency includes active community search for cases of flaccid paralysis, Guillain Barré syndrome and febrile eruption.

In addition, in the localities that present confirmed cases of polio, all the necessary processes will be carried out to identify the presence of the virus and carry out the corresponding actions.
