    Although in recent weeks, the influenza A H1N1 is a disease that captures the attention of the authorities and comments from the public, the truth is that not the most dangerous respiratory pathogens in circulation.



    The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the concern to specialists because if complications can cause death, as happened this week with an infant six months old, who also suffered from a congenital malformation that worsened their situation.



    The Chief of Pediatrics, Regional Hospital of Antofagasta, Antonio Cardenas, said that in addition to the RSV, already circulating in the environment and some adenovirus parainfluenza. Influenza A H1N1 is present, but with only one positive sample.



    Factors



    Of these viruses, RSV is the most dangerous, because when combined with factors specific to patients, care and attention deficit untimely, set a table at high risk. Deaths from respiratory disease recorded in the establishment are, precisely, because the presence of RSV.



    Antonio Cardenas warned that the presence of respiratory viruses will grow in the coming weeks, until the mid-July peak. Therefore, called for increased self-care measures.



    Yesterday a child a year and a half was connected to a mechanical ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Regional Hospital affected by RSV.



    Two other children affected by the same infection showed improvement yesterday and left the ICU to be referred to intermediate treatment. Two children hospitalized syncytial but are stable and common room.



    "When children are hospitalized for breathing problems, how important are the measures of care and timely consultation."



    Emergency



    During the first three days of June 70 adults and 157 children were treated in emergency for acute respiratory infections in the Regional Hospital.

    The director of the enclosure, Zamir Nayar, said the center is prepared to face the greater demand for care and hospitalization provided.
