Peru exceeds 20,000 deaths from Covid-19 with almost 440,000 infections
              08/05/2020 03:27

Lima, Aug 4 (EFE) .- Peru surpassed this Tuesday the 20,000 deaths from Covid-19, with almost 440,000 cases of infection and more than 22,000 tests carried out to rule out the disease in the last hours.

The Health Ministry reported that 22,327 people were tested on Monday, of whom 3,797 were positive, and that an additional 2,993 positives have been confirmed in the last seven days.

With which in the daily report 6,790 positive cases were added to Covid-19 in the Peruvian territory.

So far in the pandemic, Peru, which has become the third country in Latin America and seventh in the world with the most infections, has carried out 2,440,184 discard tests, including serological and molecular, and 439,890 were positive.

The ministry said 13,798 patients are hospitalized, 26 more than on Monday, of which 1,418 are in Intensive Care Units with mechanical ventilation.

              MORE THAN 300,000 HIGH MEDICAL

Likewise, 4,366 patients who tested positive for the coronavirus have been discharged in the last hours, after complying with the health treatment or isolation at home, with which there are 302,457 recovered patients.

In almost five months after the arrival of the pandemic in Peru, a total of 20,007 people have died with a confirmed diagnosis of the disease, with 196 deaths since the day before.

The Minister of Health, Pilar Mazzetti, said Monday in her presentation to Congress that "the numbers will continue to rise. Our figures are very difficult, all of them. Not only the figures of the deceased, the figures of the positive are also extremely complex. "

"There is a very important gap and in relation to that gap we have to act," she said, referring to the death report of the National Death Information System (Sinadef), which, at least, doubles the official figure of the ministry.

              ATTENTION IN AYACUCHO

The Ayacucho region of Surandina was the focus of attention for the Ombudsman's Office on Tuesday, since its regional hospital is not making efficient use of all the oxygen points that this establishment has, despite the fact that this supply is the most needed for patients affected by Covid-19.

The head of the Office of the Ombudsman in Ayacucho, David Pacheco-Villar, warned that the staff of the obstetrics area uses one of the rooms for patients, who have at least two oxygen points, for their rest.

Likewise, the ombudsman pointed out that three oxygen points are also wasted in a neonatal intensive care room and that a single nurse is in charge of taking care of eleven newborns, some of whom are infected with Covid-19.

In this region, the Ministry of Health, through the National Health Investment Program (Pronis), has begun the construction of two temporary care modules with 50 beds in each at the Miguel ?ngel Mariscal Llerena Contingency Hospital.

              CATHOLIC CHURCH COMBATS HUNGER

The campaign "For a Peru without hunger", organized by the Peruvian Episcopal Conference and the Fundaci?n Telet?n San Juan de Dios, managed to collect 698,669 soles ($ 205,000) to ensure the operation of 100 parish dining rooms, which offer daily lunch to 10,000 people affected by the pandemic.

The ecclesiastical jurisdictions of Lima, Callao, Chosica, Carabayllo, Lur?n, Trujillo, Iquitos, Ja?n, Huancayo and Hu?nuco have three dining rooms each, while 36 other jurisdictions in the country manage two solidarity dining rooms. EFE

UPDATE 1-Peru exceeds half a million coronavirus cases and raises the death toll to 25,648
                                August 14, 2020

LIMA, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Peru surpassed half a million cases of coronavirus on Thursday and raised the deaths to more than 25,000, in an update of figures from the Ministry of Health, as the government struggles to contain the outbreak of infections in the South American country.

The Deputy Minister of Health, Luis Su?rez, said at a press conference that 3,658 more people who died as a result of the virus were identified, after an analysis of deaths in recent months with suspicions of having had the disease.

With this, deaths from COVID-19 in Peru rose to 25,648-double compared to what was reported on July 17-; Meanwhile, the cases of coronavirus rose to 507,996 -almost double that of June 21-, Su?rez told reporters.

According to the data, the death rate was 78.6 per 100,000 inhabitants in Peru, the highest in Latin America with respect to the population in the Andean country. Likewise, the total number of infections with the disease in Peru is the third highest in Latin America, after Brazil and Mexico.

The Andean country has 32.6 million inhabitants, according to the official statistics institute with data up to June.

President Mart?n Vizcarra said earlier that the excess of confidence in the population contributed to the outbreak of the coronavirus in the country and called on Peruvians to join and collaborate with everyone to contain the disease.

"There has been an excess of confidence on the part of the population, the measures that we all must have have been relaxed, and there has been an excess of social and sports meetings," Vizcarra said at a tribute ceremony for the more than 120 doctors who have died during the fight against the coronavirus.

In a tightening of measures to contain the virus, the Government announced yesterday the ban on family gatherings and the return of the curfew on Sundays, in addition to increasing the number of provinces in targeted quarantine to cover most of the regions of the country.

Peru on Wednesday registered a record 8,875 new daily cases with the virus, while infections have increased by an average of 7,000 per day for a few weeks.

"Sometimes it is better to take a step back, to continue moving forward, because people's lives and health are above all," said Vizcarra regarding the latest measures, in the public ceremony of tribute to the doctors together with his minister of health.

Peru imposed a strict quarantine in mid-March, halting almost all productive activities in the mining country, whose economy would contract by 12% this year, in what would be the worst performance in a century according to central bank projections.

But since May, seeking to reactivate the economy, the government launched a staggered reopening that included the resumption of mining, industry and commerce, including partial service in stores and restaurants. (Report by Marco Aquino, Edited by Manuel Far?as)
