Lima, Feb 17 (EFE).- Peru has registered, so far this year, a "progressive decline" in the number of cases of monkeypox detected in the country, in a trend that is also occurring in other nations in the world, reported this Friday the Ministry of Health (Minsa).

The National Center for Epidemiology, Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) of Minsa indicated that the highest number of cases was registered during the epidemiological week from August 7 to 13, 2022, when 313 cases were confirmed in the country.

From January 1 to February 11, 55 cases of the disease have been registered.

The Minsa stressed that despite this trend, epidemiological surveillance will continue at the national level "for the identification and timely discarding of cases to prevent the spread of the disease."

The first confirmed case in Peru was reported on June 26, 2022 and, so far, a total of 3,752 accumulated cases have been registered in 21 regions of the country, with 2,864 of them in Lima, a city of almost 10 million inhabitants.

Of the total confirmed cases, 3,726 patients have already been discharged after completing a 21-day isolation period.

In addition, the CDC indicated that 96.1% (3,606) of the total number of infected are men between 5 and 75 years of age, and 3.9% (146) are women between 2 and 55 years of age.

The Minsa indicated that it continues with the vaccination process against this disease, with priority in vulnerable populations, and until February 15, 16,868 doses of vaccines have been applied, of which 12,120 were a first dose and 4,748 a second dose. .
