Uruguayan health authorities Friday announced the first case of monkeypox had been confirmed in the country. According to the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), the infection was proved through PCR testing.

“The confirmation was carried out by PCR technique and is the only one in the country,” the MSP said in a statement. “The patient, who is stable and in isolation, has a history of travel in recent days,” it went on.

“In line with PAHO/WHO recommendations, the Health Surveillance Department team has begun to identify and follow up on all contacts. For the moment, no new suspected cases have been identified about this case,” the statement further explained.

The MSP analyzes three suspected cases of the virus and ruled out 38 cases as of August 22, whereas a week ago, as of August 15, it registered six suspects and 29 discarded.

Health Minister Daniel Salinas announced days ago that the country will vaccinate against monkeypox, although not in a "widespread" way, with a campaign directed "specifically" at those who have been exposed to the virus.

The MSP confirmed a fourth contagion of the disease.

The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) confirmed a fourth case of monkeypox in the country, while there are four suspected cases. The director of the Chair of Infectious Diseases of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of the Republic (UdelaR), Julio Medina, reported that "the epidemiological profile of the four confirmed cases are young men with multiple sexual partners."

In his Twitter account, he explained that so far, the four cases correspond to men between 30 and 40 years old, where three of them have HIV, with good immunity and undetectable HIV viral load.

Regarding the epidemiological background: one of them had contact with a confirmed case of the disease, another was detected after a trip, the third had no history and the fourth had multiple sexual partners as a risk behavior, according to what the doctor described.

Among the symptoms are: fever, lesions, headache, myalgias, adenopathies, lesions, general malaise, antromyalgias and feverish sensation. Medina reported that there are two patients who are still being followed up, one has already been discharged and the other is an outpatient.
