Brazil reaches the milestone of 10,000 cases of monkeypox
    Correio Braziliense | 11/29/22 - 11:00 pm

Brazil reached 10,000 cases of people infected with the monkeypox virus. The Ministry of Health updated the numbers this Monday (11/28). According to the disease monitoring panel carried out by the World Health Organization (WHO), Brazil is second only to the United States, which leads with 29,000 infections. Worldwide, 81,000 cases have been diagnosed so far.

According to the folder, Brazil has 10,007 confirmed cases, in addition to 3,966 suspected cases and 13 deaths. Regarding the number of deaths, the country also lags behind the US, which detected 14 deaths from the monkeypox virus. In the country, deaths were registered in Maranhão (1), Mato Grosso (1), São Paulo (3), Minas Gerais (3) and Rio de Janeiro (5).

The WHO said yesterday that it has started to adopt a new term as a synonym for monkeypox, "monkeypox". After receiving complaints that the current name of the disease is racist and stigmatizing, the institution urged everyone to follow suit.

"Both names will be used concurrently for one year while 'monkeypox' is phased out," the global health organization said. A public consultation process to find a new name for the disease was launched earlier this year. During the period, several advisory bodies were consulted.

The disease is called monkeypox because it was first identified in colonies of monkeys in 1958, being detected in humans only in 1970. However, the new worldwide outbreak has nothing to do with primates — all identified transmissions were attributed to contamination by person-to-person transmission.

The state of Rio de Janeiro recorded two more deaths from monkeypox (monkeypox). According to the State Department of Health (SES-RJ), the number of people who lost their lives because of the disease rose to five.

According to the secretary, one of the patients is a 46-year-old man who lived in Nova Iguaçu, in Baixada Fluminense. The death was notified on October 31. “The patient was immunosuppressed and had severe skin lesions,” he said.

The other notification occurred on the same day. The 27-year-old patient resided in São Pedro da Aldeia, in the Lagos region, but the registration was in the state capital. The symptom onset date was October 21. “He was hospitalized for treatment and had comorbidity,” the secretary said.

According to SES-RJ, there are 1,231 confirmed cases and 138 probable cases registered in the state until the 3rd. Another 387 suspected cases are still under investigation, and 2,665 were discarded.

“Suspected cases are those in which patients of any age have a sudden onset of mucosal damage and/or an acute rash suggestive of single or multiple monkeypox anywhere on the body. They may also have swelling in Organs genitals, which may be associated with other signs and symptoms”, explains the secretary.
    probable cases

Probable cases are those in which “the patient presents one or more of the criteria listed as close and prolonged exposure, without respiratory protection, or direct physical contact with multiple and/or unknown partners in the 21 days prior to the onset of signs. In addition, he has had contact with contaminated materials such as bedding and bath linens or personal items from a probable or confirmed case of monkeypox.”

Also included are healthcare workers without adequate personal protective equipment who had contact with a probable or confirmed case of monkeypox in the 21 days prior to the onset of signs and symptoms.

“Although the disease was identified for the first time in monkeys, it is important to emphasize that the current outbreak is not related to these animals”, warns the secretary.

To give more transparency to monkeypox data in the state, SES-RJ launched the panel with official data on the disease.

Unfortunately, he died this Sunday morning at the Hospital das Clínicas Samuel Libânio, where he had been hospitalized since September 11.

In addition to the deaths in Minas, Brazil has two other deaths recorded, both in Rio de Janeiro. In total, monkeypox killed four people in the country.

Pouso Alegre and south of Minas

The scope of monkeypox in the city worries municipal managers. Of the 154,293 inhabitants in Pouso Alegre, the municipality records - including the victim - four confirmed cases of the disease, one under analysis and 45 discarded.

In addition to Pouso Alegre, which leads the number of cases of the disease, monkeypox affects other cities in the south of Minas Gerais. According to the Health Department of Minas Gerais, the municipalities of Andradas and Itajubá account for, respectively, three and two patients diagnosed with the disease.
    Federal District

Monkeypox also affects the population of the Federal District (DF). Despite not having recorded deaths, data from the Department of Health of the DF show that 280 cases of the disease have already been recorded. Regarding those diagnosed, 269 are male and only 11 are female.

In addition, through laboratory tests, 626 cases that were under investigation were discarded. In all, 215 patients are waiting for the diagnosis of the disease in the DF. The secretariat also states that most cases are present in the age group of 20 to 39 years.
    Vaccine

The first batches of the monkeypox vaccine arrived in Brazil last Tuesday (4/10). According to the Ministry of Health, the cargo landed at Guarulhos Airport contained 9,800 doses of the immunizing agent. Initially, according to the folder, the groups to be vaccinated will be people who have had prolonged contact with patients diagnosed or undergoing treatment with antiretroviral for HIV.

The Ministry of Health also expects, by the end of this year, the arrival of new batches with around 50,000 doses. The purchase of vaccines took place through the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) revolving fund and should be delivered by end of 2022.

States already register infections among babies and there is also progress among young people and women

The cases of smallpox of monkeys are on the rise in Brazil and register an increase of 767.7% of confirmed patients in the last month. With this, the country is the 3rd in the world with the highest number of cases.

Until July 20, the Ministry of Health recorded 449 confirmed cases, but the balance presented by the ministry on Tuesday (23) shows that the country has 3,896 people infected with smallpox.

With the spread of monkeypox, the age group of infected people also increased, which was previously concentrated among adult men. The states of São Paulo and Bahia recorded infection among babies under one year of age.

According to the Municipal Health Department of São Paulo, one of the patients is only ten months old and presented symptoms on the 11th. According to the folder, the baby's clinical condition is stable and he is in home isolation.

The other baby infected with monkeypox is from the city of Conceição do Jacuípe, in the interior of Bahia. He is two months old and showed symptoms on the last day 5.

Another group that begins to show an increase in cases is that of women, which increased from 1.4% to 6.8%.

The age range of most patients with monkeypox has also changed and today it affects people aged between 20 and 29 years, this group represents 44.2% of all cases.

In turn, the group of people aged between 30 and 39 years, which previously represented the majority of cases, now represent 19.9%.

Anvisa authorizes importation of medicines and vaccine without registrations in Brazil

The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) authorized last Friday (19) the importation of medicines and vaccines against monkeypox (monkeypox) without records in Brazil. The measure is exceptional and temporary.

Anvisa emphasizes that it does not actually exempt registration, but establishes a method to authorize products to combat monkeypox more quickly. The entire management of the agency voted in favor of the measure.

In practice, the measure allows the Ministry of Health to request the Agency to waive registration of drugs and vaccines that have already been approved by international agencies. The measure also simplifies the analysis of documents and facilitates the population's access to medicines and/or vaccines.

It was also established that the Ministry of Health will be responsible for defining the vulnerable and priority groups for the use of the drug or vaccine, as well as promoting the monitoring of imported drugs or vaccines and managing the guidelines for reporting adverse events and technical complaints and the guidelines for health services. .

The director-president of Anvisa, Antonio Barra Torres, declared that "the exemption from registration is a regulatory procedure, it is not to stop regulating, nor stop acting".

The measure takes effect as soon as it is published in the Official Gazette, which should take place this Friday in an extra edition.
