State Department of Health confirms first case of monkeypox in Rio Grande do Sul

              Publication: 06/12/2022 at 20:46
RS has first confirmed case of Monkeypox

The Health Department (SES) received from the Ministry of Health, confirmation of the first case of monkeypox (called monkeypox) in Rio Grande do Sul. The result was laboratory confirmed by RT-PCR this Sunday, 12, by the Adolf Lutz Institute of São Paulo (IAL/SP). The case, which has been under monitoring since May 27, is a man who is traveling to Porto Alegre.

The man sought medical attention on the 19th and again on the 23rd of May. Patient is unaware of contact with people in Portugal who are confirmed or suspected for monkeypox disease to date and reports partial improvement of the aforementioned complaints with treatment instituted. The patient is doing well and is still in isolation at home along with his contacts and is being monitored by the State Department of Health.

Control measures were immediately adopted, such as isolation and contact tracing on an international flight with the support of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). Contacts for guidance and monitoring are under investigation. The National CIEVS, operational unit of the Focal Point of the International Health Regulations (PFRSI) of the Health Surveillance Secretariat (SVS) of the Ministry of Health, has already notified the World Health Organization (WHO) in compliance with the regulation.

The State Department of Health continues to liaise directly with the Municipal Department of Health of Porto Alegre and the Ministry of Health, through the Monkeypox Situation Room and the National CIEVS, to monitor the case and trace the contacts and informs that all containment and control measures have been adopted since the notification.

In total, Brazil has three confirmed cases, two in São Paulo and one in Rio Grande do Sul. Six suspected cases are under investigation. All remain in isolation and under monitoring.

              monkey pox
Recently, cases of virus infection have been reported in Portugal, Spain, England and the United States. Until recently, all cases outside Africa were imported cases from recent travelers to the Democratic Republic of Congo or Nigeria. The cases reported in May 2022 are the first autochthonous cases, whose transmission route has not yet been established.

Monkeypox virus, although known to cause “monkey pox” or “simian pox”, is a virus that infects rodents in Africa, and monkeys are likely accidental hosts, as are humans. The infection has symptoms very similar to human smallpox, but with low rates of transmission and lethality.
