With more than 800 infected, Brazil is the 7th country with the highest number of monkeypox cases
New diagnoses of the disease have registered exponential growth in recent weeks, especially in São Paulo

        R7
Brazil is already the seventh country in the world with the highest number of confirmed cases of monkeypox (monkeypox), according to data from the Ministry of Health and international health agencies. The first diagnosis took place in São Paulo on June 8.

The most recent bulletin, released late this Monday afternoon, shows that there are 813 infections and 363 suspected cases. The number approaches the Netherlands, which has 818 patients with the disease. São Paulo has 595 cases, a number that has doubled in the last two weeks. Rio de Janeiro appears in second place (109), followed by Minas Gerais (42). In these states there is already local transmission of the virus (no connection with travel).

As of this afternoon, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) in the United States had counted more than 16,500 cases of monkeypox in 68 countries where the disease is not endemic. Spain leads the list with 3,125 cases. Then come the United States (2,890), Germany (2,268) and the United Kingdom (2,208). There have been no deaths so far outside the African continent.

Faced with the rapid spread of the disease – the first cases outside Africa were recorded in early May – the WHO (World Health Organization) declared on Saturday that monkeypox is a PHEIC (Public Health Emergency of International Concern). This is the agency's highest alert level and aims to convene governments to act together.

Monkeys: total rises 75.6% in one week and exceeds 1,000 cases in Brazil
Information is from the last bulletin released by the Ministry of Health
              By agency O Globo
07/28/22 at 6:50 pm updated on 28/07/22 at 6:57 pm

Brazil confirmed 1,066 cases of monkey smallpox (or monkeypox) until this Thursday (28), shows the last report of the Ministry of Health. There are also 513 suspects and another 597 were discarded. There are no deaths recorded in the country. The total rose 75.6% in a week when there were 607 infected.
              - PUBLICITY -

The data meets the globe projections, which showed that Brazil battery the mark of the 1000 cases of the disease at the end of July - seven weeks after the first diagnosis. With the spread of the virus, the total should double in August.

The amount focuses on São Paulo, which has 823 infected, corresponding to 77.2%. Rio de Janeiro occupies second place among states - 124 diagnostics (11.6%) - and Minas Gerais, the third, with 44 cases (4.1%).

In this scenario, the Southeast region brings together the vast majority of records. Already the North has two cases, registered in Acre and Tocantins. Only Rondônia, Amazonas, Roraima, Pará, Amapá, Maranhão, Piauí, Paraíba, Alagoas, Sergipe, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul do not confirm diagnoses so far.

Data from “Our World In Data”, which compiles official governments, places Brazil in seventh in the world's monkey smallpox ranking, surpassing Canada, Portugal and Italy. The country is behind only Spain, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the Netherlands. The growth of disease in the national territory occurs similarly to locations such as the US.

The World Health Organization (WHO) raised Monkeypox to the public health emergency category-the same as Covid-19-last Saturday given the exponential increase in cases. After Globo shows that Brazil did not have a coordinated strategy to face monkeys to the disease, the Ministry of Health has just announced the creation of an emergency committee - days after extinguishing the situation room that monitored the disease.

The country does not have vaccines and drugs against monkey smallpox. The ministry plans to buy 50,000 doses through the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), WHO representative in the Americas, to immunize health professionals. Immunizers are expected to arrive later this year.

Among the medicines, the latest endorsement lost its validity in 2010. As a result, treatment focuses on symptom relief - such as fever and rash - and patient isolation. Transmission occurs, above all, in direct contact with infected.

The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) will also implement the Monkeypox Emergency Technical Committee to streamline possible authorizations to vaccines and drugs against the disease. According to the municipality, the group must remain in force while the emergence in public health lasts.

First death of a monkeypox patient in Brazil is notified to the Ministry of Health

The notification of the first death of a patient with monkeypox, a disease known as monkeypox, took place this Thursday (28). This is a 41-year-old male patient, immunosuppressed, with other relevant comorbidities and a history of chemotherapy treatment. The Ministry of Health investigates the preponderance of viral infection in the worsening of the clinical picture and in the death of the patient. The information was released this Friday afternoon (29), at a press conference in Brasília/DF.

To increase the level of alert and surveillance, the Ministry activated the Emergency Operation Center , with the aim of drawing up a Contingency Plan for the disease for the SUS. The prevalence of the disease, according to the current epidemiological scenario, is in men with a mean age of 33 years. The cases are concentrated in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.

Monkeypox is a viral disease with very low lethality, according to the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Daniel Pereira. “Transmission, unlike Covid-19, occurs only through direct contact with infectious wounds or bodily fluids from these injuries,” he explains.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared monkeypox a World Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHIC). The main form of protection is to avoid direct contact (skin/skin) or with personal objects of contaminated people.

In the case of symptoms, such as high and sudden fever, headache, appearance of ganglion (swellings popularly known as inguas), nausea, tiredness, wounds or injuries to the body, the patient should seek care at the Health Unit closest to home. “In case of confirmation of the disease, supportive treatment will be carried out (treatment of symptoms) and the patient must be isolated”, explains the secretary of Health Surveillance, Arnaldo Medeiros.

All the necessary measures to fight the disease are already being carried out by the SUS which, even before the registration of the first cases in the country, established flows of notification, diagnosis, assistance and instituted measures to contain and control the disease. The Ministry of Health also coordinates negotiations for the acquisition of vaccines against monkeypox with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO).

                  Epidemiological situation

To date, more than 19,000 cases have been confirmed in 76 countries where the disease is not endemic. Updated data from this Friday (29) show that, in Brazil, of the reported cases, 1,259 were confirmed.

According to the most updated figures released yesterday, Friday (12), by the Ministry of Health, Brazil has reached a total of two thousand four hundred and fifty-eight (2,458) confirmed cases of monkeypox. The state of São Paulo continues to have the most cases, with 1,748.

Soon in sequence comes Rio de Janeiro (278), Minas Gerais (102), Federal District (92), Paraná (52), Goiás (53), Bahia (25), Ceará (9), Rio Grande do Norte (8) , Espírito Santo (7), Pernambuco (13), Tocantins (1), Acre (1), Amazonas (5), Pará (1), Paraíba (1), Piauí (1), Rio Grande do Sul (29), Mato Grosso (2), Mato Grosso do Sul (8), and Santa Catarina (22), according to information from the "IG Saúde" portal.

Recommendations for those infected are that these people stay in isolation and cover the skin lesions as much as possible, minimizing the risk of contact with other people. It is worth remembering that the lesions caused by smallpox can be the "gateway" for other infections and bacteria.

The Emergency Operations Center (COE Monkeypox) determined the maximum state of emergency in the country. The states range from 1 to 3, the latter being in a scenario of "exceptional severity", admitting the possibility of the situation turning into a Public Health Emergency of National Importance (Espin).

It is also important to remember that those responsible have already ordered immunizations against the disease. In all, 50,000 doses of vaccines were purchased, with the main audience being health professionals and people who had contact with an infected person.
