They find 5000 dead animals on the coast of Uruguay
JULY 23, 2023 - 13:03 Sea turtles, penguins, albatross, seagulls, sea lions and even dolphins, among other animals, on the beaches of Canelones, Montevideo, Maldonado and Rocha.
Since Friday of last week, dead animals have appeared on the Uruguayan coast, which has caused concern among experts. According to the organization SOS Fauna Marina, there are more than 5,000 animals found on the beaches of Canelones, Montevideo, Maldonado and Rocha.
So far, they have found sea turtles, penguins, albatrosses, seagulls, terns, petrels, sea lions and even dolphins, Richard Tesore, a member of the organization, confirmed to the newspaper El País.
Last week, the Ministry of the Environment took samples from 20 dead penguins in Maldonado and ruled out the possibility that they were carriers of bird flu. In the case of sea turtles, the main cause of death is fishing, Tesore said, although he does not know the cause of death for other species.
The penguins, being the ones that appear in the greatest number, were the only ones that underwent a necropsy, in which it was possible to see that the animals were "very fragile, very weak," Tesore said. What most caught the attention of the experts was that they had "empty stomachs and intestines", as if the animals had gone many days without eating.
"The overexploitation of the fishing resource is noticeable and that affects the birds," said Tesore. “They are very skinny animals, with no food in their stomachs and no layer of fat. The final death is from cold, but it is due to general weakness from hunger, ”he noted.
“30 years ago, when we started this activity, the animals arrived poisoned with hydrocarbons or hooked with fishing gear. But now what happens is the lack of food. That shows the overexploitation of the fishing resource," he said.
"The South Atlantic is completely unprotected and unregulated and that enables fishing companies from world powers and with industrial equipment to come fishing indiscriminately and very intensively throughout the year," said Luisina Vueso, coordinator of the Andean Greenpeace oceans campaign.
In case of finding injured or dead animals, the recommendation of SOS Fauna Marina is not to touch them and immediately notify the entities that deal with them. "In case they are injured, notify them so we can assist them," Tesore recommended and admitted that they have also received several live animals in recent days and that they are kept in rehabilitation.
