They find 5000 dead animals on the coast of Uruguay

JULY 23, 2023 - 13:03 Sea turtles, penguins, albatross, seagulls, sea lions and even dolphins, among other animals, on the beaches of Canelones, Montevideo, Maldonado and Rocha.

Since Friday of last week, dead animals have appeared on the Uruguayan coast, which has caused concern among experts. According to the organization SOS Fauna Marina, there are more than 5,000 animals found on the beaches of Canelones, Montevideo, Maldonado and Rocha.
So far, they have found sea turtles, penguins, albatrosses, seagulls, terns, petrels, sea lions and even dolphins, Richard Tesore, a member of the organization, confirmed to the newspaper El País.

Last week, the Ministry of the Environment took samples from 20 dead penguins in Maldonado and ruled out the possibility that they were carriers of bird flu. In the case of sea turtles, the main cause of death is fishing, Tesore said, although he does not know the cause of death for other species.
The penguins, being the ones that appear in the greatest number, were the only ones that underwent a necropsy, in which it was possible to see that the animals were "very fragile, very weak," Tesore said. What most caught the attention of the experts was that they had "empty stomachs and intestines", as if the animals had gone many days without eating.
"The overexploitation of the fishing resource is noticeable and that affects the birds," said Tesore. “They are very skinny animals, with no food in their stomachs and no layer of fat. The final death is from cold, but it is due to general weakness from hunger, ”he noted.
“30 years ago, when we started this activity, the animals arrived poisoned with hydrocarbons or hooked with fishing gear. But now what happens is the lack of food. That shows the overexploitation of the fishing resource," he said.
"The South Atlantic is completely unprotected and unregulated and that enables fishing companies from world powers and with industrial equipment to come fishing indiscriminately and very intensively throughout the year," said Luisina Vueso, coordinator of the Andean Greenpeace oceans campaign.
In case of finding injured or dead animals, the recommendation of SOS Fauna Marina is not to touch them and immediately notify the entities that deal with them. "In case they are injured, notify them so we can assist them," Tesore recommended and admitted that they have also received several live animals in recent days and that they are kept in rehabilitation.

Nearly 2,000 penguins found dead in 10 days on the coast of Uruguay

Nearly 2,000 dead penguins were found in ten days on the eastern coasts of Uruguay. The cause of this carnage, which remains unexplained, does not seem to be avian flu, local authorities said.

These Magellanic penguins, most of them young, died in the Atlantic Ocean before being washed up on the coasts of the departments of Canelones, Maldonado and Rocha (south, southeast), explained the wildlife officer at the Uruguayan Ministry of the Environment, Carmen Leizagoyen.

“ 90% are young specimens that arrive without fat reserves and with an empty stomach. ”

The tests carried out to determine the presence of avian influenza are negative.

“It is normal for a certain percentage to die, but not as many”

This species of penguin, which nests in southern Argentina, migrates north in search of warmer waters during the austral winter, and can go up to the coasts of the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo (southeast).

“ It is normal for a certain percentage to die, but not as many, ” noted Ms. Leizagoyen, recalling that a similar slaughter had taken place last year in Brazil, again for an unknown cause.

Conservationists attribute Magellanic penguin mortality to overfishing and illegal fishing . “ From the 1990s and 2000s, we started to see animals starving for food ,” lamented Richard Tesore, from the NGO SOS Marine Wildlife Rescue. According to him, the cyclone that appeared in the Atlantic that hit southeastern Brazil in mid-July had probably led to the death of the most weakened individuals, due to bad weather conditions.

In addition to penguins, Mr Tesore says he has found dead petrels, albatrosses, seagulls, sea turtles and sea lions on the beaches of Maldonado.
