Suriname authorities prepare policy on bird flu

PARAMARIBO, Suriname: The Ministry of Health in Suriname is preparing a policy to address any possible outbreak of bird flu in the country.

The ministry said in a press release that it is time for all stakeholders to draft a policy on this issue. The country is ready to formulate an action plan on its own, the Health Ministry stated.

Until now Suriname relied on assistance from the regional and international community. ?If this disease occurs in Suriname or its neighboring countries, this could have far-reaching ramifications for, in particularly, the poultry industry and food supply,? said the ministry.

Consultations with all stakeholders should ultimately result in reliable policies. Suriname should be well-prepared to eliminate infected bird populations.

The country has committed itself to implement the terms of the International Health Regulations of the World Health Organization, which means that Suriname should be prepared should a disaster such as a pandemic influenza occur.

In cooperation with the National Coordination Centre for Disaster Management (NCCR) and the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) stakeholders will meet in a two day workshop on Thursday and Friday of this week to discuss the issue.
