    EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS

After the outbreaks were detected, epidemiological surveillance and control activities were launched. Perifocal, surveillance and protection zones were established. In the three zones, a census of the entire avian population, individual clinical inspection and sampling for active surveillance began in 100% of the farms in order to assess the disease spread. It is currently established that the likely origin of the infection is the contact of non-poultry domestic birds with wild birds (family: Anatidae, species: Spatula discors), as well as other migratory and native wild birds that are being monitored for identification. As a control measure, the affected premises and the municipality of Acandí were quarantined to prevent movement of animals and products to other territories. Stamping out of affected animals and in-contacts on the premises where the disease was detected has begun.

Attention: there are 17 municipalities in quarantine for bird flu in Colombia
Other countries in the region, such as Ecuador and Peru, have already declared an animal health emergency to deal with the virus.
    12/1/2022

Since last November 13, the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) reported that it had declared a state of health emergency in national territory due to the circulation of bird flu.

The decision was made as a result of several outbreaks that were identified by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Since then, authorities and unions such as Enavi, the Colombian Farmers Society (SAC), the National Liaison Center, the Ministry of Health and the National Health Institute (INS) have had to keep track of the situation.

“The health authority reiterates that the presence of the disease in the country does not put the production or national consumption of eggs and chicken meat at risk and ensures that inter-institutional work guarantees that all efforts are being made, complying with the established protocols. at an international level to contain the disease and prevent its spread”, warned the ICA through the statement in which it revealed the declaration of the health emergency.

EMANA learned that, since the first outbreaks were identified, new cases have already been reported. In fact, there are currently 17 municipalities that are in sanitary quarantine throughout the country. They belong to the departments of Chocó, Sucre, Bolívar, Magdalena and Córdoba.

In turn, 22 sources of infection have been identified in only six municipalities and one city: Acandí (Chocó), Los Palmitos (Sucre), Tolú Viejo (Sucre), El Retén (Magdalena), Cereté (Córdoba) and Lorica (Córdoba). ).

One of the first municipalities to be identified as a focus of infection was Los Palmitos. There the owner of a property notified the authorities of a suspected case of avian influenza, since some of his birds had symptoms similar to that virus.

Later, the ICA National Diagnostic Laboratory confirmed that it was indeed a focus of bird flu, which it described as "highly pathogenic." The cases occurred in a property known as Villa Truco, which is in the rural area of Los Palmitos.

“ The total population of the property was 180 birds, 35 of which died and the remaining 145, as a sanitary measure for the control and eradication of the disease and in accordance with the established technical procedures, were slaughtered by the ICA technical staff , who also initiated epidemiological surveillance, cleaning and disinfection actions in the area, to contain and eradicate the disease," the ICA explained in a statement.

Among other measures that had been announced by the ICA after declaring a health emergency, it was announced that the holding of "gallistic events" was prohibited in the areas that have entered quarantine.

The entity gave some recommendations and prohibited some activities to those who market birds, both at an industrial level and at a backyard level. The measures included those who trade in fighting birds.

The transport of birds that have been identified as sick, the mobilization or sale of birds that have died in the production cycle and the transport of chicken manure or poultry manure without the proper sanitary authorizations were prohibited.

And it was warned that visits should not be made to "other poultry farms when the ICA has given a specific recommendation that this activity not be carried out."...
