    An outbreak of bird flu has killed 220 flamingos in north-western Argentina, officials have confirmed.

    The dead birds are of the James's flamingo species (Phoenicoparrus jamesi), which lives at high altitudes in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru.

    The H5N1 strain of the avian flu virus currently spreading through South America can infect an entire flock within days.​..

      A new outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza was identified in the department of Magdalena, municipality of Pivijay, with non-poultry birds affected in a backyard near the index outbreak and in a zone with migratory birds. Epidemiological investigations and tracing are ongoing in the identified outbreaks, clinical suspicions are monitored, samples are taken for active surveillance and cleaning and disinfection are carried out in the premises confirmed as positive. As follow-up of the on-going outbreaks in the Departments of Atlántico and Bolívar, risk communication and surveillance activities continue in the area. In the department of Bolívar, 328 premises have been inspected, with 4,853 birds monitored and 271 premises sampled. Relevant notifications are sent to the health sector and alerts to the environment sector in order to reinforce surveillance and notification of wild species in the area.

        A new outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza has been identified in the Department of Bolívar, municipality of Mompós, affecting domestic poultry (not poultry) in backyard premises. Epidemiological surveillance activities continue, including notification, sampling, cleaning and disinfection in premises confirmed as positive, risk communication activities and surveillance in the areas. The corresponding notifications of the situation to the health sector are being maintained, and the environment sector is being alerted in order to intensify surveillance and notification of wild species in the area. For the outbreaks reported in the departments of Atlántico and Magdalena, environmental sampling was carried out and the results are being awaited in order to close the event and lift the quarantine.
