Bolivian region in the Amazon declares "sanitary disaster" due to coronavirus
May 22, 2020
The Amazonian department of Beni, in the northeast of Bolivia and on the border with Brazil, declared a "sanitary disaster" after suffering an exponential increase in infections and deaths from coronaviruses, the governor, Fanor Amapo, reported on Friday.
"The departmental decree that allows the declaration of a departmental health disaster is issued," Amapo said, quoted by the state television channel BTV.
Beni, with about 480,000 inhabitants, was until April 20 the only region in Bolivia free of coronavirus infections, but in a month it came to occupy the second place in the country -after Santa Cruz- with more than 900 of the almost 5,200 cases registered by Bolivia, of 11 million inhabitants.
Meanwhile, this Amazon region boasts 56 of the 215 killed in the country by covid-19 and its health system is collapsed.
The Santa Cruz region registers more than 3,400 infections and 107 deaths.
Governor Amapo explained that the declaration of sanitary disaster "allows us to ask for help at the national and international level to confront the pandemic."
