MONTEVIDEO, March 29 (Xinhua) - Uruguay today confirmed six new cases of COVID-19 and has totaled 309 cases since March 13 and one died from the new coronavirus, according to a report released tonight by the government.
"Today, 200 analyzes have been processed, with 194 negative and 6 positive results," details the statement by the National Emergency System (Sinae), released a day after the first death by COVID-19 was confirmed.
Ten of those infected are in intensive care and two in intermediate care.
According to data from the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), patients in intensive care rooms "correspond to those over 60 years of age and most with comorbidities."
Since the confirmation of the first cases, on March 13, when the health emergency was declared, 3,126 analyzes have been performed, of which 10 percent were positive and 2,816 negative.
The age range where the highest number of cases is recorded is between 55 and 64 years (78 cases), followed by the range between 25 and 34 years (57 cases).
In addition, 25 confirmed cases correspond to health workers.
The departments with confirmed cases are: Montevideo, Canelones (south), Colonia (west), Flores (south), Maldonado (east), Rocha (east), Salto (northwest) and Soriano (west).
A 71-year-old man who was admitted several days ago in an intensive care room of the mutual association Asociaci?n Espa?ola de Montevideo was the first to die of COVID-19.
President Luis Lacalle Pou declared on March 13 the "health emergency", decreed the prohibition of public shows, the suspension of teaching classes and the closure of large shopping centers.
The government called for "social isolation", especially for those over 65 for whom a sickness allowance was enabled, and ordered the borders to be closed.
In response to the pandemic, the government announced the creation of the Coronavirus Fund to meet health and social needs, and which will be nourished by contributions of cuts in high state wages, profits from public companies and loans from multilateral credit organizations.
The MSP doubled the diagnostic capacity last week and expects to expand it in the coming days due to a circulation of the virus that became community.
Interior Minister Jorge Larra?aga evaluated over the weekend that "there is a high degree of compliance by the population" with the exhortation to remain at home.
Ticket sales in the Montevideo Metropolitan Transportation System fell 80 percent.
