The Central Laboratory of the State Department of Health sequenced and identified a new subvariant of Covid-19 in Mato Grosso, JN 2.5, which is a variation of Ômicron. This is the first record of the subvariant in Brazil.

The research was carried out between January 16th and 18th, 2024 and showed that four female patients tested positive for the new strain and were hospitalized.

Three patients were medically discharged, are stable and remain in home isolation under the supervision of Municipal Surveillance. The fourth patient had Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and died. However, the SES Surveillance team is still investigating the case and it is not possible to confirm that the cause of death was Covid-19.

“It is not necessary to create panic, but we must always be alert to flu-like symptoms. We advise you to use a mask in case of flu or cold, in addition to washing your hands with soap and/or cleaning with 70% alcohol. It is also important to look for the nearest health unit so that the doctor can determine the best way to manage the condition. Vaccination against coronavirus is also essential. Only immunization is effective in preventing the disease”, highlights the superintendent of Health Surveillance, Alessandra Moraes.

SES works to monitor the virus and identify the risk classification.

In addition to Brazil, the subvariant has also been identified in Canada, France, Poland, Spain, the United States, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

    The search

According to the research report carried out by Lacen, 15 samples positive for Covid-19 were selected and sequenced, in the municipalities of Cuiabá (8) and Várzea Grande (7). Of the total, four were identified with the new subvariant.

    The others point to strains JD.1.1, JD.1.1.1, GK.1.1, JN.1, JN.1.1 and JN.1.3, that is, 100% Ômicron variants.

For the director of Lacen, Elaine Cristina de Oliveira, the sequencing of the virus is the result of the team's commitment to monitoring the state's health. “Sequencing shows Lacen’s ability to provide a quick response to the population, as we were able to identify the entry of the virus into Brazil. Now we’re going to work on monitoring it”, highlights the manager.

Based on the information collected in the research, Health Surveillance and Lacen will work to understand the path taken for the new variant to reach Mato Grosso, as well as monitor people who have been affected by the disease and provide guidance on the relevant measures to be taken. sockets.
