  • Dozens of Students Miss Class, Virus to Blame

(Lexington County) - School officials at Nursery Road Elementary in Irmo are dealing with an outbreak of a flu-like virus that is causing a large percentage of the school to miss class.

Lexington-Richland District Five spokesman Buddy Price says 141 children stayed home Thursday, 22 left school sick, and 15 teachers were out sick. Price says a contagious, flu-like virus is to blame.

Price says Nursery Road is the only school affected so far.

The school sent a letter home to parents stating that the virus's main symptoms are vomiting, fever and diarrhea. The letter states that if a child complains of feeling nauseated, parents should keep them home for twelve hours. If the children have a fever, school policy is that they be kept out of class until they have been without a fever for 24 hours.

Price says the school will clean carefully Thursday night to prevent the risk of contamination. School leaders will also speak Friday to students about good hygiene to prevent infection.

"...a contagious, flu-like virus is to blame... the virus's main symptoms are vomiting, fever and diarrhea."

It's crossed the atlantic then, this flu-like illness? In the UK they called it a mixture of Norwalk and Flu B, or just the 'winter vomiting bug'. I wonder what they'll call it in the US?
