Jersey City police mystified by death of one of their own

    March 1, 2006, 3:32 PM EST

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) _ By all accounts, police Officer Kevin Kim Jones was feeling just a little under the weather.

The 42-year-old Jersey City native and Army specialist had returned home from his second tour of duty in Iraq in November, and resumed his beat in the city's west side working the night shift.

Jones, a 6-year veteran of the force, had three days off after wrapping up five days' worth of shifts on Sunday, and his friends and fellow officers say he told them he felt a flu coming on.

But when his girlfriend didn't hear from him, she called police, who went to Jones' apartment and found him dead Tuesday night, said Jersey City Police Chief Robert Troy. Troy estimated Jones had been dead about 12 hours.

There was no evidence of foul play, Troy said. An autopsy was scheduled but a toxicology report won't be returned for two weeks.

Troy and Jones' brother, Robert, said he had no history of mental or physical illness.

"It's very strange," Troy said. "He was very young."
