    Pneumonia claims eight lives in Badakhshan
    FAIZABAD, Feb 8 (Pajhwok Afghan News): At least eight people were reported dead and seven more in precarious condition in Shkashim district of the northeastern Badakhshan province due to snow slide and outbreak of pneumonia in the region, said people representatives of the area who claimed reaching provincial capital after 12 days of walk through snow capped mountains.
    Shkashim district chief Said Imran Khan told Pajhwok Afghan News on Wednesday snow slide killed one person in Gharan village and injured seven others including children and women.
    The wounded were in critical condition, he said and warned of human tragedy if the officials didn't redress the problem.
    Over 150 cattleheads had been killed that had turned a huge financial loss to the poor families, Imran added.
    Mohammad Nazar, 50, an elder from Shkashim district said four children, three aged people died in our area due to biting cold and pneumonia.
    "There is a single medical centre that cannot meet the large needs of the people," he lamented.
    Meanwhile, a group of people arrived from Arghanchkhwa district also demanded assistance to reduce the harsh effect of winter that had already claimed seven lives and left five injured with damaging 100 houses.
    Arbab Haider, one of the representatives of the region, said the dwellers were in the intense need of foodstuff , coal and warm clothes.
    Confirming the existing problem, Provincial governor Munshi Abdul Majeed said he was quite aware of the trouble in the area but was perplexed how to send them aid as the routes were closed by snow.
    Foodstuff and other relief items were provide by World Food Programme (WFP), United Nation Children Fund (UNICEF) and only chopper could transform them to the snow-hit zone, he added.
