  • How to avoid catching the swine flu at the poker table

    Written by Gavin Michael (www.europokerpro.com) Tuesday, 21 July 2009 19:42

    The new Swine Flu (H1N1) pandemic is taking over the world fast and vigorously. The WHO has described the pandemic as unstoppable. According to the estimates there are already over million cases in the United States alone, and in United Kingdom estimated 55,000 have caught the virus during the last week.

    Luckily vast majority of the cases have so far been relatively mild, however there have been cases even in the USA where previously healthy young adults have died due to catching the flu. If you belong to one of the groups which is at the increased risk (for an example if you are pregnant or have asthma) the disease is particularly dangerous. Worst of all many experts predict that the virus will become more lethal in the coming months.

    Poker tables and casinos (the real ones, not the online ones) are one of the easiest places to catch the flu. This is mostly because people touch their chips, and the chips constantly move from one player to other. Below we have listed several ways to decrease the risk of catching the H1N1 virus at the poker table. Those who are the highest risk (and those who don?t feel like gambling about getting sick) might even want to consider not playing at the casinos for a while.

    * WASH YOUR HANDS

    This is without a doubt one of the easiest ways to decrease the probability of the catching the virus and still it is overlooked by many. So whenever you leave the casino wash your hands with warm water and soap for 20 to 30 seconds.

    * DON?T TOUCH YOUR FACE

    If you are one of those poker players who loves to touch their face when they are in tough spot, well try to avoid dong it. If you feel uncomfortable when people are staring you down you should possibly consider instead trying to go all Phil Laak and wear a hoodie + sunglasses. If you don?t feel like doing it simply look down when people try to get read on you instead of hiding your face with your hands.

    * DON?T EAT AT THE POKER TABLE

    One of the easiest ways to catch the H1N1 is by playing at the poker table, touching dirty chips and then touching with your hands the food you are going to eat. Eating at the poker table is somewhat disgusting even without the swine flu circulating around, but with it running around you should at very least avoid eating the foods that you have to touch with your hands.

    * DON?T PLAY IN THE SAME GAME WITH OBVIOUSLY SICK PEOPLE

    We hear some of you saying ?but the sick people can?t concentrate and are unlikely to play good poker?. Yes that is probably true, but still if you are serious about avoiding the flu you should skip the games with sick people in them.

    This is a good way to look at it: If you play in the game with a sick person you might earn little money, but even in the best case that you become just mildly ill after catching the flu you will end up spending several days laying in your bed ? you could have used those days to try win loads of money from poker.

    It is important to note that almost in every single case the swine flu is much worse disease than the common cold you catch every now and then.

      Welcome StayAwayFlu.

      The perceived target of that article may result in more people getting the message than the usual scare headline. Good tactic.

      So whenever you leave the casino wash your hands with warm water and soap for 20 to 30 seconds.
      In addition to the above advice, I'd hope knowlegeable casino patrons also have a pocket-sized bottle of alcohol gel, for the unexpected need.

        When it comes to pandemic viruses and casinos, don?t gamble with your health, wash your hands often.

            The same principles can be applied in many situations such as banks, shops, public transport etc.
