  • BACK TO EDEN Gardening

This approach to gardening encouraging the use of deep mulch this is less labor intensive as it discourages weeds and conserves water. It takes a lot of mulch. My garden gobbled up four dump truck loads and could have used more. Deep rooted weeds such as milk weed, thistles and poke weed are not "discouraged" by a deep layer of wood mulch. Voles are not "discouraged" either. This works well as long as mulch is deep and renewed periodically. I also found that certain tree wood and bark chips were less desirable. My fruit bushes and fruit trees did not like the black walnut wood chips until they composted. The movie detailing process can be viewed for free at the web site below. - AC

"BACK TO EDEN shares the story of one man?s lifelong journey, walking with God and learning how to get back to the simple, productive methods of sustainable provision that were given to man in the garden of Eden. The organic growing system that has resulted from Paul Gautschi?s incredible experiences has garnered the interest of visitors from around the world. However, never until now have Paul?s methods been documented and shared like this!"

Back to Eden Gardening is a no-till vegetable gardening technique that uses wood chip mulch to build healthy soil that is capable of producing nutrient-rich food, resulting in the most productive garden and farm!

We think a popular repellant concoction made from castor oil and garlic worked well to rid an area of moles. (This was some turf they were digging up really badly. We tolerate some damage, but this was too much.)

This article says that castor oil might work to repel voles, too, and I've read that elsewhere.

I don't remember adding red pepper to the mixture, but I'm not sure. There are various recipes online and I just made my own variation that was easy to mix and apply directly to fresh mounds. I only had to apply it once or twice. It may even repel deer to some extent, because one of the mole mounds was near a rose the deer love and they left it alone this year. (Could be they are just not around the neighborhood this year, though.)
