  • Comparison of the number of COVID-19 cases in the United States from five data sources

As more coronavirus cases are reported in the United States (US), the more variability there is between publicly available tabulations.

The table below compares the number of US COVID-19 cases from five data sources from the internet, Wikipedia, COVID-19.app (hat tip to gsgs for the link), Johns Hopkins data set, The World Health Organization (WHO), and a tabulation based on FluTrackers posts.

Since late January when the first case from the US was reported the number of cases has increased slowly, until the last two weeks when the number of cases started to increase dramatically.

The last column in the table displays the difference between the maximum and minimum number of cases reported among the five data sets for each calendar day. In the past two weeks the magnitude of data variation has been increasing. Yesterday, the difference between the WHO situation reports (with 213 reported cases) and the COVID-19.app (with 438 reported cases) was 225 cases.

At this time, it seems that the WHO situation reports are lagging in reporting cases from the US and that perhaps the COVID.app is overstating the number of cases in the US. While the exact numbers of cases in the US at any point in time is uncertain, all these data sets show that the number of cases in the US is rapidly on the rise.
