Since 1931 in Mexico they celebrate every January 6, since they are considered a gift of kings for patients.

79 years ago, the then director of the Hospital Juarez de Mexico, Jose Castro Villagrana instituted Nurses Day, through the work of those engaged in nursing. Llas vaccination campaigns and eradication of contagious diseases have been successful, such as smallpox eradication, neonatal tetanus, measles, poliomyelitis and diphtheria, and control of tuberculosis and whooping cough.

However, as workers also suffer rationalization policies and shrinking resources have marred their salaries. At the same time there is an increase in the number of queries, stagnating workforce, impairment of facilities and lack of equipment or medical equipment as well as epidemiological contingency recently by the arrival of the influenza A (H1N1).

Another phenomenon to which professionals face health care are the risks resulting from contact with elements that can be infectious and contagious, and an environment of constant stress.

The nurses are responsible for immediate care and who have a greater contact with hospitalized patients, so their work is central to health care because they are the first contact of patients.

    IMSS will feast

As part of celebrations to mark the Day of the Nurse, Coahuila delegation of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) will offer a range of activities and awards to more than 4 thousand people working in this category.

Will also be issued diplomas and economic stimulus to 108 nurses and nurses who in 2008 stood out for their commitment and vocation.

The ceremonies will be held in each of the hospitals of the Mexican Social Security Institute, as part of activities in Saltillo, Parras, Monclova, Torreon and Piedras Negras, workshops will be academic, scientific and cultural.

Jos? Luis D?vila Flores, representative of the IMSS in Coahuila, explained that the nurse represents 30 percent of workers in the state, hence it is the closest contact with patients and the most defining feature of the human face of the Institute .

The selection of workers who receive the recognition called "A Performance of Nurses Education in 2008" was conducted using a detailed analysis involving aspects such as job performance, professional growth and research. The recognition consists of a certificate signed by the director general of the IMSS, Daniel Karam Toumeh, and an economic stimulus.
