Medic suffered head injury chasing mentally ill man

A paramedic who died chasing after a mentally ill man in Bensalem last night suffered a head injury, police said this morning.

They said it is not clear if he fell or suffered a medical problem.

Investigators are awaiting an autopsy to establish the cause of death, police said.

The medic has been identified as Daniel McIntosh, 39, a married father of two daughters, aged 1 and 5.

McIntosh was a 13-year veteran of the Bensalem Rescue Squad and a tactical medic for the Bucks County South SWAT Team who was recently hired as a part time police officer for Hulmeville Borough, Bensalem police said.

Police said McIntosh and another medic responded to a call for a mentally ill man on the 2600 block of Kiansas Avenue about 7 last night.

When the man fled, McIntosh chased after him.

Police said it is not clear what happened next, but it appeared that the medic fell and hit his head.

McIntosh died an hour later Aria Health-Torresdale Campus, police said.

The mentally ill man was taken into custody and was being evaluated, police said.

Please change the title of this thread. Over the past 24 hours, rumors have been swirling around here that this was either a homicide by the patient, or the result of an unidentified illness. Both rumors are apparently false. There were also some false rumors as to the identity of the victim.

Still it shows what a dangerous job HCW can have.

BENSALEM, Pa. ? A Township medic was killed last night when he was stabbed while responding to a report of an emotionally disturbed person.

Details on the incident were limited last night, but the stabbing appears to have occurred sometime around 9 p.m. at a location on the 2600 block of of Kiansas Avenue near Dunksferry Road. Police and medical personnel responded to the scene, and the mentally unstable patient allegedly stabbed the medic, who has not been identified. The victim was taken to Aria Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said they were withholding the victim?s identity until his next of kin could be notified.

Police said the suspect had been detained and was being evaluated last night.

Heart Attack Killed Bensalem EMT During 911 Call

Bensalem, Pa. authorities have determined that a paramedic who died on the job Sunday night (see previous story) had a massive heart attack.

Bensalem public safety director Fred Harran (at right in top photo) says Bensalem's emergency workers are in mourning:

"It's a tragic day for Bensalem."

Emergency medical technician Dan McIntosh, 39 (right), is the first paramedic to die in the line of duty in the township's history.

Rescue squad director Tom Topley (at left in top photo) says they are taking two full days to officially grieve:

"For the first time in our history we're not responding to calls, today and tomorrow. We've gotten a lot of help from outside communities, and we have ambulances from outside communities protecting our people right now in the town."

McIntosh was responding to a report of a suicidal person on Sunday night. The patient ran away when McIntosh arrived to help. McIntosh suffered a coronary when he ran after the man.

That patient is now being treated for his mental illness. No charges have been filed.

McIntosh, a 13-year veteran of the Bucks County rescue squad, leaves behind a wife and two young children.

Bensalem paramedic Dan McIntosh died doing what he loved -- helping people.

Sunday night when he was first on the scene of a 911 call, he was trying to help Edwin Agosto, who'd threatened to kill himself and took off running when the ambulance arrived.

McIntosh took off after Agosto.

"I heard something fall and I turned around and saw him on the ground and he wasn't moving," said Agosto.

Bensalem paramedic Dan McIntosh died after... "He [McIntosh] gave foot chase and suffered a massive heart attack and fell, suffering severe trauma to the head," said Fred Harran of the Bensalem Police Dept.

McIntosh's own rescue crew rushed him to the hospital, where the 39-year old husband and father of two was prounounced dead.

"What do you say to little girls, that their Daddy's gone?" asked Mike Golden, a friend and EMT for Bensalem Township.

Friends said McIntosh was a fantastic guy.

"If you needed something, he'd do it in two seconds," said Dan DiSilvo, President of Bensalem Twp. Rescue.

It was the first time in rescue squad's history that they'd lost a colleague. McIntosh was with the unit for 13 years.

"That's the job we signed up to do and you just try to come home safe," said Edward Copper, another Bensalem Twp. EMT.

Agosto, who investigators said had a history of mental issues, wanted the McIntosh family to know he was sorry.

"I apologize for everything! I mean right now, I'm shaking. I don't know. I did not want it to happen like this," said Agosto.
