Transitioning Children from Public School to Homeschooling

    By Brenda Hoffman

If your child is already enrolled in school when you make the decision to homeschool then you will have to transition your child. There are some things that you will need to consider.

There will be a transitional period of time once your children begin homeschooling. This is the same type of transitional time that would be needed for anyone who is undergoing a major change in his or her life and routine. During this time it would be a great idea to prepare your child for the new, upcoming educational experience. Take some time off between leaving public school and starting homeschool to do this. You should also help your child truly understand that their education can take place anywhere, even at home within their own family unit.

Once you begin homeschooling your child will still need some time to adjust to the new experience of doing school at home and all of the new freedoms that this will bring. This is important to understand because you do not want to push your child too far too fast. Homeschooling will be very different for your child. At school they had bells, crowds, noise and distractions but at home there is nothing to distract them from their teachings, lessons and learning. These environments are so very different from one another. This is why it is so important for children to have time to decompress.

During this decompression time you should not have high expectations of your child. You also should not become stressed thinking that if you do not start doing some school work soon that you will fall behind. Just relax! One of the greatest benefits of homeschooling is having the ability to be flexible with your schedule. Plus when you actually do begin to do school work you will most likely find that the individual attention that you are able to give your child will be highly beneficial. Most likely your child will not only make up for any lost time but will also far surpass anything that you had planned for them.

This is not to say that you should not try to make some use of this time because you should. You can spend this time talking to your child. Take time to talk to your child. Get to know what they are interested in and what they enjoy learning about. Find out what their dreams are and what they want to be when they grow up. Talk to your child about setting goals for working toward their dreams and what small steps the two of you can take together to reach these goals and dreams.

During this decompression time you can also spend some time reassuring your child so that they feel confident with the decision that you have made. Make sure you let your child know that they will be able to spend a lot more time learning about what they are interested in. Tell your child that they will also be able to spend more time studying these things in greater detail. You can also get your child?s mind jump-started thinking about the great projects that they will now have time to do.

If you spend this transitional time doing these things then you will find that your child is able to make a successful transition from public school to homeschooling. All it takes is some patience from you and some relaxed time for everyone. The end results will be well worth it as everyone will be excited and energized about the wonderful new possibilities that lie ahead.
