      Re: Pennsylvania Renewable Energy Fest

      Report from the Festival

Attended the Pennsylvania Renewable Energy & Sustainable Living Festival today. There was a good mix of exhibitors and speakers on the topic of renewable energy. Most seemed to have a good handle on what they claimed as their area of expertise. My better half reported the speaker on Hybrid cars and electronic car conversion was pretty basic. We came away with a few ideas to make the homestead more energy efficient with an eye toward eventually going net 0. (It’s nice to dream!)

      The ideas included:

Start by working with what we have and adjusting some habits.
      1) Make the home more energy efficient with compact florescent lighting, energy efficient appliances, added insulation, passive solar installations, more energy efficient windows, having an energy audit done, thermal scan, eliminating phantom loads, using dehumidifiers and exhaust fans when appropriate during hot weather and using rain water collection barrels.

      2) Changing habits such as line drying clothes and being more conscious of what appliances are purposely being left “on” (computers, monitors, etc.) and using timers and zip strips to control them, simple passive solar fixes such as opening blinds and curtains in winter to let in light and heat and closing them in the summer to reflect it and cooking outside more during the summer to avoid heating up the interior of the home.

      3) The suggested first step toward homemade, sustainable, renewable energy that was suggested was getting a solar hot water heater. Some of the various kinds were briefly discussed.

      4) The next step would be to produce electricity via solar, wind. Options for wind and solar electricity production were briefly discussed. There was a talk on small scale hydroelectric but I was not able to attend it. Geothermal was suggested for heat. Vendors also displayed and demostrated wood, pellet and grain/soybean buning stove and furnaces.

One talk that had standing room only was on SPIN farming. Roxanne Christensen discussed SPIN farming: methods of making small-scale micro farms in suburban and urban areas, sustainable and profitable. These farms do not require the large financial investment required by traditional modern farming practices. The speaker generously shared suggestions on farm bed specifications, specific equipment and building requirements (post harvest processing facility, shed for storing tools, farm stands for selling produce), costs involved with obtaining land, equipment and tools. She recommended specific tools such as stirrup and wheel hoes. She also went into the time and labor estimates needed per acre and added guidelines to help optimize farm output using available labor and resources.

This was more than just a big victory garden. After listening to her talk I wanted to tare apart my garden beds and start over from scratch utilizing some of her designs. She suggests using uniform sized beds separated by narrow walkways and claims 480 of these beds can fit in one acre. I’m too tired at this time to check the math. These beds can easily be straddled and allow for measuring individual bed profitability and productivity. It also allows the farmer to more easily specify intensive farming beds (beds that turn over 3 crops in a growing season), Bi-? Beds that turn over two crops in a growing season and long season beds with only one crop per season. Her stated SPIN farming goal was to have a $100 dollar return per bed, per crop. While I doubt I can come close to this ambitious goal I believe I can utilize many of her practices to improve productivity and use my limited time and labor more effectively.

All in all a productive day, even the weather cooperated providing plenty of sunshine and comfortably cool temperatures. I wish we could have attended more of the lectures. My husband would have like to have gone to the ones on geothermal and biodiesel. I would have liked to attended more on local sustainable food systems and passive solar earth shelters.
