In case of a zombie apocalypse: The East Coast is done for, the Rockies might be safe, but we’re all probably going to die, anyway.

Those unsettling survival tips come courtesy of a Cornell University study about a hypothetical zombie apocalypse, which is one research team’s way of giving new blood to studying disease modeling.
“
Modeling zombies takes you through a lot of the techniques used to model real diseases, albeit in a fun context,” grad student Alex Alemi, one of the study’s four authors, told Phys.

The team sunk its teeth into statistical mechanics to simulate the most realistic outcomes of a zombie outbreak in America.
They found that contrary to common zombie lore — where the walking dead seemingly take over the whole world in one terrifying swoop — it’s more likely that major cities would fall first; but isolated areas could be zombie-free for months.

The exercise is modeled after a curriculum designed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those not 'infected' Tuesday worked to assess the problem, devise a way to eliminate it and figure out how to handle the existing zombies.

"We laugh and tease and say 'Why zombies?'" Wells said. "It really represents our deepest fears, and it represents something that is not real. If we can prepare for something that's not even possible, then we can prepare ourselves for anything that might come our way."

Added Emily Rynda, a U-M staffer-turned-zombie:

"It's fun, but it's a really important message as well. It's a way to take something serious and that is probably kind of boring and make it more exciting."

WASHINGTON -- "The zombies are coming!" the Homeland Security Department says.

Tongue firmly in cheek, the government urged citizens Thursday to prepare for a zombie apocalypse, part of a public health campaign to encourage better preparation for genuine disasters and emergencies. The theory: If you're prepared for a zombie attack, the same preparations will help during a hurricane, pandemic, earthquake or terrorist attack.


The Federal Emergency Management Agency hosted an online seminar for its Citizen Corps organization to help emergency planners better prepare their communities for disaster. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last year first launched a zombie apocalypse social media campaign for the same purposes.

Emergency planners were encouraged to use the threat of zombies ? the flesh-hungry, walking dead ? to encourage citizens to prepare for disasters. Organizers also noted the relative proximity to Halloween.

Among the government's recommendations were having an emergency evacuation plan and a change of clothes, plus keeping on hand fresh water, extra medications and emergency flashlights.

With fears of a possible ?Zombie Apocalypse? growing, the feds have been forced to deny that the undead are real.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made it clear in a statement that flesh-eating, undead creatures definitely don?t exist.

?CDC does not know of a virus or condition that would reanimate the dead (or one that would present zombie-like symptoms),? CDC spokesman David Daigle wrote to the Huffington Post on Thursday....

The Berkeley County Health Department wants you. No, they really do want you in all of your gory greatness for a disaster-training exercise on June 8 at Martinsburg South Middle School.

Residents who wish to take part in the Point of Distribution exercise ? which has been dubbed ?Zombie Attack? ? need only show up at the school along Bulldog Boulevard in Martinsburg between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., said Carl French, the county health department?s threat preparedness coordinator.

Facts and Advice
Know the risk in your area. Other than zombie attack, your region may be susceptible to flooding, earthquakes or tsunamis. Find out and get prepared.
Devise a plan. When zombies attack, or wildfires strike, you'll have to act fast. Your plan should include:

Safe exits from your home and neighbourhood;
A meeting place to reunite with family; and

Pre-determined out-of-province contacts so friends and family will know you're okay.
Get an emergency kit. There's no time to collect supplies when zombies are shuffling around your neighbourhood! Make sure to assemble grab-and-go kits for your home, office and vehicle. They should contain supplies for a minimum of 72 hours.
May was chosen for Zombie Awareness Month because cult classics like "Night of the Living Dead" and "Dawn of the Dead" are set in spring.
Last year, the US Center for Disease Control created a graphic novel, Preparedness 101: Zombie Pandemic, that demonstrates the important of emergency preparedness.

How did zombies become the go-to mascots for health, safety and emergency preparedness?

Blame the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Ever since the CDC started its tongue-through-cheek "zombie preparedness" campaign a few months back (because if you can prepare for a zombie apocalypse, you can also prepare for a hurricane, earthquake or pandemic), it seems everyone wants a piece of the undead. The latest:

• A new smartphone app called "Zombies, RUN!" prompts runners to run faster to escape rotting, brain-hungry invaders. The running game is designed for experienced joggers who need an extra adrenaline rush or for novices who just need a push off the couch. "We have all the built-in instincts in our brains to run away from predators," says one of the developers.
• Michigan State University is offering a new online course entitled: "Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse -- Catastrophes and Human Behavior." Mostly, it's about how people get through plagues, meteor strikes and such.

The dead walked among the living in Delaware ? for a day anyway.

Ohio Wesleyan University's Selby Stadium turned into zombieland for a mock drill by the Delaware County Emergency Management Agency and Homeland Security.

More than 200 volunteers in costumes participated in what's dubbed the "zombie exercise."

Ohio county holds mock zombie outbreak to train emergency responders

The mock zombocalypse is being organized by the Delaware County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and will include 250 ?zombie victim? volunteers...

The XX century mid' 50 propaganda myths were quite prototypical and well designed.

U.F.O. and other scary monsters were amazing creatures able to emphasize and drive behaviour of the entire Western world imagination.

Different meanings had the myths in Japanese culture (Godzilla and other 'mutants'), and the hidden message of genuine horror after the A-bombs during the last days of WWII and the projection of the young Japanese people toward a new society - only dreamed - amidst the actual rigid traditions.

Zombies also had - according my opinion - a revolutionary meanings and their inscription in today disaster preparedness may be a result of these old progressive instances but also might be the product of the old fashioned but highly effective 'Invasion of Body Snatcher' propaganda.
