New Zealand Influenza Surveillance 2015

    INFLUENZA WEEKLY UPDATE
    2015/34: 17?23 August 2015


    Summary
     Influenza-like illness (ILI) through sentinel surveillance was reported from 18 out of 20 District Health
    Boards (DHB) with a national consultation rate of 123.7 per 100,000 (415 ILI consultations).
     A total of 1094 swabs were received from sentinel (72) and non-sentinel (1022) surveillance.
     477 influenza viruses were identified: B (not lineage-typed) (253), A (not sub-typed) (136), A(H3N2)
    (78), B/Victoria lineage (6), A(H1N1)pdm09 (3), and B/Yamagata lineage (1).

    INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE
    In the past week, a total of 415 consultations for influenza-like illness were reported from 63 general
    practices in 18 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 123.7 per 100,000 patient
    population. Figure 1 shows the weekly national consultation rate for 2015 in comparison to the average
    seasonal curve in 2000?2013 (excluding 2009). For more details on threshold definitions, see Appendix. The
    current rate of influenza-like illness is below the alert threshold.

    Comment: NZ continuing with its new flat alert threshold this week, which contradicts its own definition : "Alert threshold (defined as 90% upper confidence interval) indicated here is a level above which,varying by time of year, influenza activity is higher than most years" (emphasis added). Using the older version (see post 11 above for example), the alert threshold for week 34 was about 80/100,000 which has most certainly been exceeded this week. - Ro

      Summary
       Influenza-like illness (ILI) through sentinel surveillance was reported from 18 out of 20 District Health
      Boards (DHB) with a national consultation rate of 88.7 per 100,000 (290 ILI consultations).
       A total of 994 swabs were received from sentinel (68) and non-sentinel (926) surveillance.
       422 influenza viruses were identified: B (not lineage-typed) (243), A (not sub-typed) (85), A(H3N2) (84)
      including one A/Switzerland/9715293/2013 (H3N2), B/Victoria lineage (7) including five
      B/Brisbane/60/2008-like, and B/Yamagata lineage (3) including two B/Phuket/3073/2013.

      In the past week, a total of 290 consultations for influenza-like illness were reported from 60 general
      practices in 18 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 88.7 per 100,000 patient

      seasonal curve in 2000?2013 (excluding 2009). For more details on threshold definitions, see Appendix. The
      current rate of influenza-like illness is below the alert threshold.

        Summary
         Influenza-like illness (ILI) through sentinel surveillance was reported from 18 out of 20 District Health
        Boards (DHB) with a national consultation rate of 77.2 per 100,000 (244 ILI consultations).
         A total of 961 swabs were received from sentinel (64) and non-sentinel (897) surveillance.
         427 influenza viruses were identified: B (not lineage-typed) (282), A (not sub-typed) (74), A(H3N2) (59)
        including one A/Switzerland/9715293/2013 (H3N2)-like, B/Victoria lineage (6) including five
        B/Brisbane/60/2008-like, B/Phuket/3073/2013-like (5), and A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like (1).

        INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE
        In the past week, a total of 244 consultations for influenza-like illness were reported from 57 general
        practices in 18 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 77.2 per 100,000 patient
        population. Figure 1 shows the weekly national consultation rate for 2015 in comparison to the average
        seasonal curve in 2000?2013 (excluding 2009). For more details on threshold definitions, see Appendix. The
        current rate of influenza-like illness is below the alert threshold.

          Summary
           Influenza-like illness (ILI) through sentinel surveillance was reported from 18 out of 20 District Health
          Boards (DHB) with a national consultation rate of 48.4 per 100,000 (154 ILI consultations).
           A total of 903 swabs were received from sentinel (45) and non-sentinel (858) surveillance.
           288 influenza viruses were identified: B (not lineage-typed) (199), A (not sub-typed) (42), A(H3N2) (33)
          including two A/Switzerland/9715293/2013 (H3N2)-like, B/Yamagata lineage (8) including one
          B/Phuket/3073/2013-like, B/Victoria lineage (4) including two B/Brisbane/60/2008-like, and
          A(H1N1)pdm09 (2) including one A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like.

          INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE
          In the past week, a total of 154 consultations for influenza-like illness were reported from 58 general
          practices in 18 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 48.4 per 100,000 patient
          population. Figure 1 shows the weekly national consultation rate for 2015 in comparison to the average
          seasonal curve in 2000?2013 (excluding 2009). For more details on threshold definitions, see Appendix. The
          current rate of influenza-like illness is below the alert threshold.
          (The alert threshold being used does not match the definition given, however the current level of ILI activity has fallen below the older threshold for Week 37 which was around 60/100,000 - Ro)

            Summary
             Influenza-like illness (ILI) through sentinel surveillance was reported from 18 out of 20 District Health
            Boards (DHB) with a national consultation rate of 41.8 per 100,000 (130 ILI consultations).
             A total of 790 swabs were received from sentinel (34) and non-sentinel (756) surveillance.
             304 influenza viruses were identified: B (not lineage-typed) (158), B/Victoria lineage (35) including nine
            B/Brisbane/60/2008-like, B/Yamagata lineage (27) including 12 B/Phuket/3073/2013-like, A(H3N2)
            (61) including one A/Switzerland/9715293/2013 (H3N2)-like, and A (not sub-typed) (23).

            INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE
            In the past week, a total of 130 consultations for influenza-like illness were reported from 56 general
            practices in 18 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 41.8 per 100,000 patient
            population. Figure 1 shows the weekly national consultation rate for 2015 in comparison to the average
            seasonal curve in 2000?2013 (excluding 2009). For more details on threshold definitions, see Appendix. The
            current rate of influenza-like illness is below the alert threshold.

              Summary
               Influenza-like illness (ILI) through sentinel surveillance was reported from 17 out of 20 District Health
              Boards (DHB) with a national consultation rate of 39.3 per 100,000 (118 ILI consultations).
               A total of 764 swabs were received from sentinel (20) and non-sentinel (744) surveillance.
               173 influenza viruses were identified: B (not lineage-typed) (97), B/Victoria lineage (18), B/Yamagata
              lineage (14), A(H3N2) (28), A(H1N1)pdm09 (3), and A (not sub-typed) (13).

              INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE
              In the past week, a total of 118 consultations for influenza-like illness were reported from 56 general
              practices in 17 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 39.3 per 100,000 patient
              population. Figure 1 shows the weekly national consultation rate for 2015 in comparison to the average
              seasonal curve in 2000?2013 (excluding 2009). For more details on threshold definitions, see Appendix. The
              current rate of influenza-like illness is just above the seasonal threshold.
