Authorities wary of upcoming flu season

PAPE?TE, Tahiti (Tahitipresse) - Health officials announced in Pape?te that 33 influenza A cases have been reported in French Polynesia over the last months.
Health officials announced six more influenza A/H1N1 cases during the week-end.
Out of the six new cases, two are "imported cases" from people returning from vacation overseas. The four other cases were locally produced.
With an estimated 30 percent incidence rate, Tahiti?s health officials have calculated that the influenza A has a potential of spreading to 80,000 people throughout French Polynesia during the traditional fall and winter flu season that is approaching.
That potential is based on the French Polynesia Statistical Institute?s study of the number of flu patients in 2007.
Serious flu cases are expected to involve 5 percent of the confirmed cases, or some 4,000 people, the Health Ministry reported.
The first influenza A case was reported in French Polynesia on May 8.http://pidp.eastwestcenter.org/pirep...t/08-12-10.htm
