    Fiji tops regional H1N1 tally

    Saturday, July 18, 2009

FIJI has the highest tally of pandemic H1N1 2009 in the Pacific.
Health Ministry spokesman Iliesa Tora said this result has been because of Fiji's testing facilities as well as the fact that we are a lot more open to travel.
"For Fiji, the confirmation cases have been quick," Mr Tora said. "The main factor has been the fact that we are open to a lot more travel than any other Pacific country.

"We are able to test samples and confirm cases at our laboratory at Mataika House. The other Pacific countries can't do that so their detection is slow, thus the lesser numbers of recorded cases."

The first confirmed case here was reported almost a month ago on June 20.
Mr Tora added that greater care needed to be taken by those in high risk groups during this period, including children under five years old, adults over 65 years old, pregnant women, as well as people with chronic disorders and other medical complications.
