City steps up flu awareness drive

    Saturday, July 18, 2009

SUVA City Council workers engaged in an awareness program on pandemic H1N1 2009 with inspectors from the Health Ministry yesterday in an effort to curb the increasing number of confirmed cases.
The awareness seminars with corporate bodies have been extended to schools and government departments as well.
SCC health educator Taito Waqaiyavana said they initially planned to have an in-house awareness seminar on H1N1 but were happy to have health inspectors from the ministry present the impact and effects of influenza A (H1N1).
"We were planning to conduct our own awareness on H1N1 with our health inspectors and when we called Ministry of Health for more information, they volunteered to facilitate the seminar," he said.
Health spokesman Iliesa Tora said awareness seminars have been organised by the ministry with corporate bodies, schools and government departments in an effort to combat H1N1.
He said they had also disseminated awareness material on H1N1.
"Close to 100 have been visited at different centres. On the public front, we have our teams visiting schools and we also use the media to disseminate our messages," he said.
The awareness seminar was held at the lower civic auditorium and organised by the human resources section and the health education unit of SCC.
