    Influenza killer season sweeps city
WA has recorded its worst ever week for patients taking themselves to hospital emergency departments suffering from respiratory viruses.

The Health Department?s latest Virus Watch report for the week ending May 26 shows a sharp increase in people suffering viruses such as the flu, colds and bronchiolitis.

It is more than 31/2 times the number of cases at the same time last year.

In the past week alone, there have been 700 influenza notifications. This is the second worst week on record.

Acting director of communicable disease control directorate Paul Effler said vaccination supplies were tight but urged people to get the flu shot, saying the illness could be a ?killer?.

?There are indications that it?s been quite severe (already), but the number of hospital admissions for influenza confirmed cases is not that high yet,? he said.

?It would be premature to say this is the worst flu season we?ve had.?

The unexpected early arrival of the flu season ? and its severity ? has caught authorities off guard as hospitals struggle to deal with the flood of sick patients...
