Health authorities in American Samoa to screen cruise passengers for swine flu

Posted at 19:40 on 14 May, 2009 UTC
The Unified Health Command in American Samoa will conduct "passes surveillance" for two separate cruiseships scheduled to call into the Port of Pago Pago over the weekend.
The Dawn Princess and the Pacific Sun will each have a little over 2,000 passengers and crew members on board and will arrive on two separate days.
American Samoa Health Department medical director Dr. Ivan Tuliau said local health officials had a conference call with both cruiseships earlier this week to brief them about the local screening process to protect the territory?s border from swine flu.
Tuliau says each cruiseship has their own physician and medical personnel on board and they will work with local officials in advance to isolate any cases with flu like symptoms.
Tuliau said the health forms will be distributed on board the two ships.
Territorial health officials will also board the cruiseships and will conduct "passes surveillance" or visual screening of passengers before disembarking.
