Australia sees surge in mpox cases in the past three months
SYDNEY - Australia has seen a rapid rise in mpox cases in the past three months, with one health expert concerned that low vaccination rates could be driving a spike outside cities.

So far in 2024, 737 cases have been recorded, with the vast majority of cases occurring in the last few months.

In comparison, there were 26 cases in 2023 and 144 cases in 2022. The majority of 2024’s new cases occurred in the south-eastern states and all but two cases were reported in women.

A spokesperson for the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care told AFP that cases have been increasing since May 2024...

Professor Ben Cowie said in an alert on Friday that Victoria's outbreak was the biggest since Victoria recorded its first case in May 2022.

He said the state had recorded 330 mpox cases since April 2024, with 27 people hospitalised.

The cases in Australia are a variant of clade 2.

It comes amid an mpox outbreak in NSW that the state's chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant has labelled "very concerning".

Chant said earlier this month the state was experiencing its biggest outbreak since May last year, with 433 cases recorded since June and 26 people with severe symptoms hospitalised.
                    ...
More than 1,119 cases have been notified to federal authorities as of Friday, with three-quarters located in Victoria and NSW (329 and 512, respectively).

In the six months to Thursday, there have been confirmed hospitalisations in both Victoria (27) and NSW (28).
                    ...

Authorities say while the majority of mpox cases are among men who have sex with men, the disease can affect anyone — with several cases in females reported in Victoria.

Authorities have issued a warning after a series of locally-acquired mpox cases in Perth.

WA Health acting communicable disease control director Paul Effler said “men who have had sex or intimate contact with other men in Northbridge sex-on premises venues such as adult shops or saunas” in the past month were most at risk.

Eight cases of mpox have been detected in WA since August, all confirmed or suspected as clade II – the milder strain circulating in the Eastern States.

The first few cases were acquired in the Eastern States, but the most recent cases have been acquired locally...
