All three are men, one in his 30s and two in their 20s, and all were diagnosed with the virus after recent trips to Tonga.

The first of the cases was reported on the week ending February 19, while two more were reported on the week ending February 26.

All three were diagnosed through lab tests after visits to the doctor and none of them were admitted to Timaru Hospital, a Community and Public Health spokesman said.

The three Zika cases have added to an increasing number who have contracted the virus before returning to Canterbury in recent months.

Two Ashburton women, both aged in their 30s, were confirmed as having the Zika virus in February after visiting Samoa and North Canterbury woman Piliniuote Fifita, 40, contracted the virus in January after visiting Tonga.
