Delta Variant. Dead on arrival is new Fiji Covid-19 trend https://www.rnz.co.nz/international/...covid-19-trend

Health Secretary James Fong said there was concern at people with severe disease who arrive at a medical facility in the later stages of their illness.

"And we are also sadly seeing people with severe disease die at home or on the way to hospital before our medical teams have a chance to administer what could potentially be life-saving treatment."

A 15-year-old girl has become Fiji’s youngest death due to the covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, taking the total of deaths due to the virus to 58.

Health Secretary Dr James Fong has confirmed this after an investigation by medical personnel classified the case as another covid-19 death.

The girl from Colo-I-Suva was declared dead on arrival by the attending medical officer at the Raiwaqa Health Centre last week.

“This means that she either died at home or on her way to the health facility. Her family reported that she had been feeling unwell for two days,” Dr Fong said.

“Her symptoms included cough, shortness of breath, and chest pain.

“She was not vaccinated — she was not in the target population of people 18 years and over that are eligible to receive the vaccine.”

            Two other covid deaths today
Her case was announced along with two other covid-19 deaths in the past day.

“The first covid-19 death we are reporting today is a 56-year-old woman from Vatuwaqa who died at home.

“The second covid-19 death was an 87-year-old woman from Nasinu. She presented to the FEMAT field hospital in severe respiratory distress. Her condition worsened at the FEMAT field hospital and she died two days after admission.

Both these patients were not vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine, donated by New Zealand and Australia, which the Health Ministry is administering to all eligible people around the country.

This brings the total deaths due to the virus to 58, with 56 of these deaths coming during the outbreak that started in April this year.

Separately, there have been 26 covid-19 positive patients who died from serious medical conditions that they had before they contracted the virus. These cases are not classified by the ministry as covid-19 deaths...

MOH: 15-year-old girl dies of severe COVID-19 and leptospirosis; 968 new cases
                Timoci Vula
                5 August, 2021, 10:32 pm

A 15-year-old girl from Tavua – and is among the 11 COVID deaths reported over four days from August 2 – died of severe COVID-19 with leptospirosis, clinical investigations have revealed.

Ministry of Health and Medical Services permanent secretary Dr James Fong said the teenager was presented to a medical facility in respiratory distress and was transferred to Lautoka Hospital.

He said the young girl’s family had reported that she had a fever, cough and shortness of breath two days prior to presentation.

“Clinical investigations revealed that she was positive for both leptospirosis and COVID-19. Sadly, her condition worsened at the hospital and she died one day after admission (August 3, 2021),” Dr Fong said.

“Her doctors have determined that she died from severe COVID-19 with leptospirosis. Both diseases contributed to her death. She was not vaccinated against COVID-19; she was not in the target population of people 18 years and over that are eligible to receive the vaccine,” he said.

Dr Fong also reported 968 new COVID-19 infections tonight for the 24-hour period that ended at 8am today.

Of that, 292 cases are from the Western Division and 676 cases from the Central Division.

The 11 deaths, meanwhile, were recorded for the period August 2-5; and aside from the 15-year-old girl, the other deceased persons were between the ages of 51-90 years old.

Seven of those cases were reported to have died at home, and all were not vaccinated.

Eight of those deaths were in the Central Division and three deaths in the Western Division...
