  • USA - Texas: San Antonio: Four people being screened for coronavirus MERS after potential exposure

Have these people returned from the Middle East recently? Or are they contacts of the Florida patient? Or has there been some other kind of exposure? The article doesn't say.

SAN ANTONIO-- Four people in San Antonio have been tested for MERS.

Two tests have come back negative and Metro Health is awaiting results on two others. Those results should be in soon.

"None of them are sick, but they all have potentially been exposed," said Dr. Thomas Schlenker with City of San Antonio Metropolitan Health District. "If they come back positive it means that they have been in contact with the virus. It doesn't mean that they're sick, but it means that they're much more likely to get sick from it."

MERS is the acronym for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. Symptoms are similar to the flu.

Patients exhibit fever, coughing and trouble breathing.

The only two confirmed cases in the U.S. were documented this month: One in Indiana and one in Florida.

One patient has fully recovered and has been discharged from the hospital. The other patient is in the hospital and doing well.

Both were health care workers who had recently returned on two separate flights from the Middle East.

"The risk is actually very low because being on the same airplane is not really intimate contact," said Dr. Schlenker. "There's really no danger at all for the general public. Those individuals who have been in contact have been notified."

Four individuals under investigation for MERS-CoV in San Antonio, Texas

MERS, or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, is a respiratory illness that begins with flu-like fever and cough but can lead to shortness of breath, pneumonia and death. It was first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012.

The virus has recently become an issue in the U.S., with just a few confirmed cases. But it could be spreading.

San Antonio Metro Health officials say that 4 people in San Antonio have been tested for MERS.

Two of the four tested negative, and they are still waiting for results on the other two.

Those results are expected back in couple of days.

MERS belongs to the coronavirus family that also includes the common cold and SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome. There are currently two confirmed MERS cases in the U.S.
