South Korea fears MERS may have spread to new hospital (AFP)

Seoul (AFP) – South Korea on Saturday said it was closely monitoring a hospital in eastern Seoul over fears that hundreds of people there may have been exposed to the deadly MERS virus.
A 70-year-old woman who caught Middle East Respiratory Syndrome while visiting an infected relative in a different hospital was feared to have spread the virus to the new site.
“We are focusing our efforts in tracing contacts and isolating people who came close to this patient”, a senior health ministry official told journalists on Saturday.
The woman died on June 25, two days after she was diagnosed, but due to the virus’s 14-day incubation period, anyone she infected may only start showing symptoms in the coming days.
The official said it was too early to say whether the outbreak may be on the wane, given that new cases are expected at the new site.
“We would be able to talk about any trend of the outbreak only after watching the development at the hospital”, he said.
The comments came as the country reported one additional MERS case, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 182 in the largest outbreak of the deadly virus outside Saudi Arabia.

SEJONG, June 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korea reported an additional case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) on Saturday, bringing the total number of people diagnosed with the disease here to 182.

The latest case involved a nurse who was apparently infected while treating a patient. The nurse, however, reportedly has not shown the usual symptoms, including a fever, raising the possibility for the country's very first confirmed MERS patient that is free of any visible signs of the illness.

The authorities also confirmed the 182nd patient, who was previously said to be the first to be diagnosed with MERS while showing no symptoms, in fact had experienced mild MERS-like symptoms prior to her diagnosis.

The 27-year-old nurse, who was exposed to the virus while working at the Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong, had been quarantined at home from June 7-24. She was diagnosed Friday, two days after the quarantine had ended.

“We interviewed the patient and it turned out that she did have some symptoms while being quarantined at home,” said Kwon Deok-cheol from the Health Ministry, revoking his previous statement from the day before. The Health Ministry had announced Saturday that the patient could be the first to be diagnosed with MERS while being asymptomatic.

“We learned that she experienced mild indigestion on June 14. She also said she coughed whenever she was in cold air.”
