South Korea reports two more deaths in MERS outbreak, three new cases
South Korea's health ministry reported on Monday two more deaths in the country's Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak, bringing the number of fatalities to 27.
The ministry also confirmed three new cases, taking the total to 172 in an outbreak that is the largest outside Saudi Arabia.
The new fatalities were aged in their 80s with pre-existing health problems, according to the health ministry.

The latest victims were men aged 84 and 97. They contracted the virus in Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, and Dae Cheong Hospital in Daejeon, respectively.
...
Three new cases were also confirmed that brought the total number of patients to 172.
One of them, a 60-year-old woman, was infected with the disease while staying at the emergency room of Samsung Medical Center in late May when the nation's 14th patient visited there and spread the virus to nearly 80 others.
Her case is causing more controversy over the incubation period of the disease, which experts say is up to 14 days, because she was diagnosed with the virus 10 days after that period had passed.
...
According to the ministry, the 172 cases mainly came from six patients who spread the virus to at least two others.
The nation's first patient transmitted the disease to 30 people including 28 at Pyeongtaek St. Mary's Hospital in Gyeonggi Province.
The 14th patient, a so-called "super-spreader," contracted the virus from the first patient and spread it to 80, mainly at Samsung Medical Center.
The 16th patient, also infected from the first patient, transmitted the disease to 23 others.

New cases raise questions on 2-week latency period
June 23,2015
The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced three new confirmed MERS patients on Monday, bringing the total number of cases in Korea to 172. It also announced the passing of Patients No. 101 and 128, raising the death toll to 27.
Controversy surrounding the disease?s maximum two-week latency period, recommended by the health authority, arose after Patient No. 171, a 60-year-old woman, was reported to have visited Samsung Medical Center?s emergency room between May 27 and 29, when the virus was transmitted to about 80 other people from Patient No. 14.
?Patient No. 171 had a slight fever between June 9 and 11, but she tested negative in her initial examination on June 10,? said Jeong Eun-gyeong, an official for the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ?She?s been quarantined since then and was confirmed to have the virus after she experienced a high fever on June 17.?
Officials said that even supposing Patient No. 171 contracted the virus on May 29, she still began exhibiting symptoms five days after the maximum latency period for the disease.
The health authority added that the possibility that the initial test result was inaccurate should not be ruled out, as she could have been in the early stages of infection. Another possibility is that she was infected by her family members. She visited the emergency room with her husband and son, who stayed with her until they were also confirmed to have MERS on June 11.
It is also possible that Patient No. 172, a private nurse for Dae Cheong Hospital in Daejeon, also began exhibiting symptoms more than two weeks after she came into contact with MERS patients. The 61-year-old worked at the hospital in May and had contact with Patients Nos. 16, 30 and 54 until June 1. She started showing symptoms on June 15, exactly 14 days after her last day of exposure.
