Shilla hotel halts business on Jeju over MERS

    2015/06/18 19:26

JEJU ISLAND, South Korea, June 18 (Yonhap) -- Hotel Shilla, the luxury accommodation affiliate of South Korea's biggest conglomerate, Samsung Group, said Thursday that it has suspended its business on the southern resort island of Jeju over the deadly MERS virus.

Shilla said its operations will not be resumed until after concerns over the possible transmission of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome are dispelled.

It said it has asked its guests to leave the hotel on the island.

The announcement came after media reports that an unidentified person stayed at the hotel along with family members between June 5 and 8 before the person was confirmed to have been infected with the virus. No details about the person were immediately available.

No new patients from Samsung Medical Center

The Shilla Hotel on Jeju Island also closed on Thursday after Patient No. 141, who was confirmed for MERS on Saturday, was found to have traveled to Jeju Island from June 5 to 8 with family and friends.

The 42-year-old man visited a horseback-riding course and a theme park while in Jeju. The Health Ministry immediately isolated 56 people, including those who accompanied him on the trip, hotel employees and flight attendants.

Patient No. 141 contracted the disease while visiting the Samsung Medical Center?s outpatient ward with his father on May 27.

The man made headlines over the weekend, however, when he opted instead to visit Gangnam Severance Hospital via taxi after showing symptoms, even though the Gangnam Community Health Center had sent an ambulance to pick him up.

However, he fled the hospital before he could be put in isolation or confirmed, charging out of the building and going home again via taxi.

Health workers reported that the man was enraged and had shouted that he would spread ?MERS to everyone? if he tested positive.

Defiant MERS patient gives his version of events

      June 25,2015

Amid the shadow cast by the outbreak here of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), no patient made more headlines than Patient No. 141, whose allegedly defiant behavior was the subject of a multitude of news reports and online conversations.

The 42-year-old was exposed to the virus in Samsung Medical Center?s outpatient ward when he visited with his father on May 27, the same time Patient No. 14 - who went on to transmit the disease to more than 80 people - was being treated there.

He then traveled to Jeju with his family from June 5 to 8, when he went to a horseback-riding course and a theme park. The hotel at which he stayed was also sealed off on June 18.

In a telephone interview with the JoongAng Ilbo on Tuesday, the 42-year-old, staying at Seoul Medical Center for treatment, complained that he had been falsely accused and the rumors about him were groundless.

?I didn?t break the latch and break out of the room because there was no latch in the first place,? he said. ?I also didn?t go to entertainment establishments either like the rumors said online.?
