(LEAD) S. Korea reports seventh MERS death, 8 new cases

        2015/06/09 08:45
        ...

The latest fatality, the seventh since the country first reported the outbreak on May 20, was a 68-year-old female who had already been suffering from chronic heart conditions, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

She was hospitalized at Seoul's Samsung Medical Center on May 27-28, during which she came in close contact with a MERS patient.

So far, all infection cases have occurred at hospitals where at least one MERS patient had visited or stayed for treatment -- the reason the government believes the disease can still be contained.
        ...
Currently, the disease has a fatality rate of around 8 percent here.

Still, health officials here are struggling to find out the reasons for what they have called the unusually fast and wide spreading of the disease...

South Korea says its deadly MERS outbreak may have peaked

SEOUL, South Korea ? South Korea believes its MERS virus outbreak may have peaked, and experts say the next several days will be critical to determining whether the government?s belated efforts have successfully stymied a disease that has killed seven people and infected nearly 100 in the country.
The biggest outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome outside the region where it was first seen in 2012 was introduced to South Korea last month by a 68-year-old man who had traveled to Saudi Arabia and other nearby countries.

MERS starts to spread more widely in Korea

People infected at Samsung Medical Center go home ill

              June 10,2015

A major worry about the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) outbreak is coming true: The disease is spreading to other regions as people who visited Samsung Medical Center move from Seoul not knowing that they?re infected.

Samsung, one of Korea?s biggest and best hospitals, accepts patients from every corner of the country. The Ministry of Health and Welfare is worrying about possible fourth-generation infections, although none have been reported.

The health authority announced nine more MERS cases on Tuesday, raising the total number of patients to 95, and reported one more fatality, Patient No. 47, the country?s seventh victim. Nine MERS patients, Patients No. 12, 23, 24, 28, 42, 58, 74, 81 and 83, are in critical condition.

Out of the 95 cases, 56 are in third-generation patients. They contracted the disease from Patients No. 6, 14, 15 or 16. All the rest contracted it from Patient No. 1, although in nine cases it?s uncertain whether they are second- or third-generation infections.
